All, I would be very, very excited about this 1924 Peace dollar I just received in the mail except for one spot. The skin seems great most of the places. In one photo of the obverse, you can see some marks on the left side. Is there anything those could be other than a cleaning? Would be such a shame because I think the rest of the coin is great! And, you can only see those marks at one small angle. What grade would you give it? If you don't think it's cleaned, that is! Thanks

Hi Kevin, Cleaned, but still a beaut to look at ( Peace dollars are my faves...that wind swept beauty never grows old). Where'd ya get this one from, the bay? -Jay

What makes you say cleaned?

It does not look improperly cleaned in the images. Perhaps dipped but not over-dipped IMHO. Looks like a MS64 easy.
P.S. Pics through a flip can be tough to interpret.

Doesn't look cleaned to me. It looks real nice, and might even go MS65 if indeed graded undetailed.

The strike and luster look terrific. Based on the first picture, it has an MS65 look. However, the last obverse picture gives the appearance of a scratch below the eye, some marks on the neck and eagle, which could lower it down to MS63.

I don't see how it could be cleaned... MS-64 is my opinion.

Wow! Glad to hear a lot say it might be uncleaned. I have a feeling it's MS64 with a very real chance at 65, personally. But, to answer Noah, the reason I said it was cleaned is shown in the last obverse photo. On the left side, between "IN GOD" and the "L I" in liberty, there are a few small parallel lines, which I'm assuming are scratches of some sort, indicating a cleaning. I know for a fact that I cannot differentiate between scratches and die polishings. And, I didn't think die polishings are present on Peace dollars very often, if ever. If you think it's uncleaned, what are those marks? Do they make it AU58? Or, maybe rough handling with cotton gloves? Again, those marks are VERY difficult to find. They only come out at one tiny angle. Anywhere else and they are gone.

Can't see anything in the pictures, but they are probably hairline scratches that may hold it back from a 65, but really can't tell from the pictures.

I also don't think it's been cleaned. Maybe dipped at sometime. A couple of fine hairlines on the obverse other than that it's a beauty. MS64

derekjacoby,
I'll preface this by apologizing for the misinterpretation my terse reply engendered. I did not intend to razz or harrangue you. I weighed in on the pics with what I felt, and am happy to stand corrected by any folks with a keener/sharper eye than mine. :)
I recognize I prolly used the wrong terminology; I meant to communicate the idea of 'dipped' when I said 'cleaned', and definitely did *not* mean to suggest/imply it had been polished in any way shape or form.
I still think it is a beauty coin. I think it exhibits some fine luster, and I would be tickled to have this one. Are you going to keep it? Methinks you are looking to nab a raw and slab her with the goal of netting an MS65?
Thanks, Jay

Very nice coin. I would agree with those saying MS64.

Those lines are an incidental contact with some relatively-soft surface; a new dining room table cloth is capable of creating them on a silver coin.
