Would never presume to speak for Vermontensium. I imagine "Tough coin" would refer to the difficulty inherent in finding a nice type 2 1913 s Buffalo nickel. yours is in the vg range...nice coin.

Quote: What do you mean by tough coin? It's a key date, an extremely low mintage. Yours is a Type Two, where FIVE CENTS is recessed below the straight line of the mound in which the buffalo sits. Type One coins have that whole mound present - no line - and FIVE CENTS was on the mound, where it wore off almost immediately. That's why they went to the Type Two design. It's like this: combined, 1913-S Type One and Type Twos together are the 7th-smallest Buffalo mintage. Individually, they're tough to find. The coin you've posted is worth in excess of $100.

Hmm, I have to admit I am a little shock to know vg my thought was just good. I'm glad to hear it.
what would be the best way to preserve it just in a 2 x 2?

Although the horn is saying VG10, the rest of the coin is screaming VF8. I'm going with VG8. looks cleaned to me but could be wash out from the lighting. can you try to post pics with natural light to show the surfaces better?
Also, just an FYI, for future postings, there are two forums for grading, this coin should be posted to the U.S. Modern Coin grading forum. Some folks only review that one and they would miss your post.

While some graders might not see the post here, Buffalo nickels are defined in CCF as classic coins. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...asp?CAT_ID=2

WOW that is a super nice coin. Your details looks to be VG.8 Front F.12 back. Other than the oddities that is the toughest buffalo to get. I would put a value of around 400$.
