Almost certainly MD; there are no known 1923-P's with doubling like that.

Welcome to Coin Community, coincurbstompin. I certainly hope it isn't your collecting goal to ever curbstomp a coin. " DDO" is short for "Double Die Obverse;" if you look at the doubling on the coin Voshus007 posted - particularly the date - you'll see what it (sorta) looks like. That is actually Machine Doubling (MD), which happens when the die jumps/bounces during the striking process. Die Doubling happens when what's called the Working Hub (the tool that presses the coin's design into the die) strikes in two different places during separate hits (it used to take more than one strike to create a die). The features of the coin are therefore doubled and all coins struck from that die will show the doubling to one extent or another. Die doubling is considered a Mint error of interest, but Machine Doubling is just an artifact of the minting process. It happens frequently, regardless of what die is in use, and doesn't really generate interest except for extreme examples. Of course, it's not listed as a variety for those coins which have designated varieties.

Thanks for the reply super dave. I do not think I will curbstomp any coins especially ones I like. The explanation of MD was very good. I have never heard of that one before. Now I now a DDO might be a MD. Thanks again for the reply.

I now understand the difference between a DDO and a MD.... but here is the next question: How can you tell the difference. Because to my untrained eyey, they look SO terribly similar. Thanks!

There's a good example of it on VAMworld in the discussion forum. "so you think you have a doubled die?"
