A while back there was a thread in which the importance of the holder was discussed. Someone asked if coins were sometimes bought for the holder. Completely unrelated to that I set a goal for this year to assemble a slabbed birth year set. However, the more I thought about it the more I started to think that the holder did matter. A nice presentation requires consistency and one way to achieve that would be to have matching holders. So I decided on NGC slabs, which I think are the most handsome, for all of the coins. I just finished the set and here are the results: (The photos are a bit dark but for the purposes of my point they should suffice.) So, I have to admit I did, in part, buy the coins you see here based on their holder. Does this make sense to anyone besides myself, or am I just being a bit silly about this? Oh, and by the way, I need to replace the 1957 D nickel with one in the correct holder. Edited by NJ Bob 05/30/2013 9:39 pm

Im the same way as you, I like the holders to all look the same. For me its PCGS which is why I'm selling my NGC coins but everyone has their own taste.
It does make life harder sometimes, but its not buying the holder like some may suggest. You can still find coins to match the holder you want without just blindy buying things.

Very ... very nice Bob. Just so happens to be my birth year too. I totally agree with " the consistency of holders " matters. I have even paid to get NGC coins reholdered with a brown label, to fill out my " brown label " collection.

Thanks. I'm really pleased by the fact that the proofs all came from the same set.

Weeeeelll .... if I'm absolutely honest .. slabs just aren't my thing. However I guess I can see that it's nice they look consistent! For myself, I'm not sure I would change one perfectly good coin for the same in a different TPGS slab. But then, I'd always break my coins out of the slabs anyway, because I store mine in a wooden tray! That said, the great thing about a forum like this is the different approaches and interests of everyone here. It wouldn't be nearly as much fun if we all liked the same thing, would it? (Oh, and here's some of mine in their drawer, so you can see what I'm talking about):

You get two collections in one... One; a coin collection, and two; a slab collection. Both are very nice!

But now that I found it, it is sooooo obvious. At least it is the slab in the middle of the page and kinda looks right but it would bother me too.

Your set looks good, but I for one like the sealed proof sets and mint sets . There again we are all different , crazy and stupid in some ways. or at least I'm stupid at times.

I too have come to a consistency and "symmetry" desire with my slabbed "runs" of 9X? slab pages. For me, I like the PCGS slabs much better as I truly don't like the "soap bar" look of the WHITE NGC slabs. White is a very poor color choice, IMO. It is okay for copper/pennies but is bad with silver and nickel which is most of what I collect. I actually prefer the look of ANACS blue top slabs, of all, but it is so low on the totem pole it would be tough to just accumulate those without sending them in myself! Thus I have sold some of my NGC slabs and replaced them with PCGS counterparts ( usually at a tad more in price ) for the sets I really care about most(Buffs, Mercs, Walkers). But my Peace, $10 Indian, Frankie and IHC "slab albums" are a complete mixed bag still - too expensive/difficult to convert them all. As basebal21 says, you have to get coins that match the slab grading - which means still buying the COIN but the right coin in the right "labelled holder" is the formula I use. Here's the other issue though. This NGC set runs from 63 to 66. For real consistency, I like the grades to match as well - like all 65's on a page instead of up and down. Or minimally, all of the row being the same. Chew on that one! OUCH! The one nice thing about slab pages is you can define the "runs" any way YOU WANT. Like your skipping of SAN FRAN mintmarks and doing Proof Phillies per denom instead. It works!
