That is good. At least you know you have a gold piece of significant value. Let us know if you find it to be a altered mintmark or a straight out counterfeit.

The poor photo looks amazingly legit. Do you have more? I don't know much about gold or where the dies were made, but reaching back in my memory bank I seem to remember that sometimes the dies were made at one location and shipped. For instance, if MM punches were made at Denver and shipped to New Orleans, it seems very feasible the engraver could mistake one for the other.

Still watching, I'll be eating my

All the dies were made at Philadelphia (this was true until 1997 when Denver opened their own die shop and they now make their own. Their Master Hubs are still made in Philadelphia.), and mintmarks were also punched in in Philadelphia as well.

If that's a fake mint mark, it's a tremendous piece of work. Could you show us the date?

Amazing pics. One more request: Can you post hi-res images of the entire obverse and reverse? Thanks!

That date and mintmark (diagnostically) are spot on.
This is very interesting...I'm stumped quite frankly!
If it is an added mintmark, it's good.

I have to think about this.

Brianmos, what sort of equipment are you using? If you're getting dSLR-lelvel, really huge images, I'd like a set if possible for me to play with in the Gimp.

That would be great if he can send hi-res images to you. This would be a "rock-the-numismatic-world" find if it turns out to be a U.S. Mint struck coin.

I'm not buying it that way; my current leaning is it's an attached mint mark with the visible horizontal striations around it employed as "camouflage." No gold was struck in New Orleans that year, likely because of the planned run of 20 Centavos which no US Mint had ever struck before. So no dies would have been ordered or produced. No 1907 New Orleans gold has ever been found, and given the reasons one might surreptitiously strike it, one would think at least a piece or two would have surfaced in the century since. It would have required collusion between two different Mints to happen.

Hey SsuperDdave. I can't send the pics via email because I'm a new member. I use a Dino Capture 2.0 1280 x 1024. It's a pretty standard camera you can get at any Jewelry Supply house. It takes nice closeup pics of Morgans that we sell on ebay. If you want I can send you or post my email address. Let me know. I'd be happy to send full pics of both side.
