If this is what it appears to be, it's not listed or mentioned anywhere that I have found. I asked at "the other place" for opinions ... and 50 people have "no opinion" ... The seller was in Estonia ... via ebay (The german site) and I paid more for postage than I did for the coin. I could see something was going on with the 7 ... but it looked more like maybe an 8 over 7 in the seller's picture. I bought it out of morbid curiosity. I was really surprised to see this appear when I took pictures of it this morning, right after it got here. I tried only to take the shot that best defined the "7" ... and this is what appeared. Maybe it's something other than what I think it is ... but what, pray tell, would that be? Pic coming ... Chance

To my knowledge Chance, there is no known overdate for this year.

I know ... and if there's another theory as to what it may be ... I'd be more than interested. FWIW ... The Estonia seller had probably 15 listings of common date US coins. Everything looked "right as rain". I also brought in a 1920-S from Italy this morning that's at least an AU-55 ... maybe 58, that I paid about 30 percent of book for. I recently bought a type 2 1886 Indian head in VF for $15.32 including postage (from Germany). Ilove repatriating these pieces. I started shopping the alternative ebay sites about 2 years ago, and have made some purchases that could never have happened on the US site. I bought a lot of 54 dimes from a London seller .... 9 barbers, of which 2 are BU, a 1903 and a 1913 ... both Philly minted, plus 2 in XF, a 1910 and a 1916, and I also made 12 upgrades to my merc set, all issues minted prior to 1927. For that lot, I paid right about 4 dollars per coin. I'll turn the lot back out w/o the best pieces and recoup much of the investment. Chance

I'm guessing that what you're looking at is far more innocuous than it might seem, quite possibly just a smear of color on the coin rather than anything raised. The area appears to be a "healed" (via circulation wear) spot of PMD, since none of the other lettering near the rim appears weak.

Got busy and had to drop the ball for awhile. There are days when my life is not my own ... and this was one of those.
I was thinking that maybe the die was damaged and that was a fortuitous die chip. There is evidence of clashing. I've spent a little time trying to locate another coin similar to this one ... and the best part, is that as strong as what's present of the "7", I can't replicate that picture....well, I wasn't able to in a half a dozen tries.
It does appear to be raised though. I have to polish the lenses on my loupe so I can really examine it. I got nickel sulphate on it (electroless nickel plating solution) and I can hardly see through it now. I thought (and still think) that the lenses are glass, but they're a mess. The thing comes apart, so I'll clean it up and let you know what I find when I'm able to see it close up and personal.
Thanks much ....... Chance

Thanks for sharing, but I think we'd need much better photos to make a judgement. Other possibilities include lamination or a die gouge. Could also be damage sustained immediately after circulation, then it got worn over. Can you get better pictures?

I might be able to actually. I got a new camera ... a Sony finepix, and it's got a lense that's much larger diameter than the little Kodak I always used (until I dropped it and wiped out the logic board)and if the close up filters that I had for my old Canon AE-1 Program will fit this lense... I should be able to get significantly better pictures. If I recall correctly, there's a +1, a +2, and a +4 filter. I'll dig those out tomorrow morning and try to get better pictures.
I think a die gouge is quite possible ... because I wouldn't think the damage would know to be lower than the digit, and damage generally doesn't work that way. There's the arc below the crossbar of the 7, but there's also disturbance above it...at the same depth, both shallower than the digit.
