So I have been interested in those new dollar coins with the presidents on them. The problem is, where do you get them besides a bank? Does anyone actually use them to buy things at stores? I saw a coke machine at my school that says "this machine accepts $1 coins" but I don't think anyone has ever used any.
Any tips?

They last few years arent made for circulation any more. You can still get some at banks, and occasionally see them randomly in cash drawers if one had been used. For the new ones though if you want those you need to buy them from someone or order then from the mint if youre trying to get them all.
If youre just looking for some trying to get them from your bank is the best bet since you can pay face value there

many banks don't like them, so they may be willing to swap $1 for $1 without having an account there. If your local post office has a vending machine, those might give the dollar coins in change. The token vending machines at the mass-transit near me, give small dollars in change. As far as spending the small dollar coins, look at Project $100K. Circulating Dollar and Half Dollar Coins which CCF is getting them in everyday use.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard some sub-ways give dollar coins out. ( the vending machine)
To be honest though, banks are your best shot at getting them. I can walk into my bank any day and get a roll or two. (bank of america)

Vending machines that take bills larger than a $1 will dispense change in dollar coins as well as the self serve stamp vending machines at the post office.
Those stupid self serve toll booths in Indiana also give change in dollar coins

Pretty much the same out here in northern Virginia. Besides, banks, the only locations I have found them at are the post office stamp vending machines and the mass-transit Metro station vending machines.

Here in OKC the banks & credit unions have ROLLS of them. Which reminds me, I need another couple rolls of them. As far as big city mass transit goes, that should be the spot to get them in vending type machines. Our postal stamp vending machines used to spit them out with purchase as change when using a twenty dollar bill...I may be dating myself, but I do remember most of them being Suzy-B's with the "new" Sacagaweas.

Here in the Boston area you can definitely get them as change from the subway machines. Over the weekend I watched a woman get some in change and then overheard her mention that she had no idea what they were or what they were worth. Her accent was definitely American, so it's not like she was a foreign tourist or something.

My credit union has over 1000 rolls of these dollars just sitting in the vault. I was looking for Ike's and half dollars. I passed because I just can't like them. I hate the size and color- like cheap tokens. Had they been like the Ike dollars in size and color I would have been all over these. Heck, I would have collected them if they had even been the size of a half dollar.

I bet they have $1,000, not 1000 rolls.

You can come to my garage sale tomorrow through Saturday, ElizSmith. I'm using them as change. I plan to get rid of a few Kennedy 50-cent pieces, too.

I went to a self-serve car wash today, and the change machine gave $1 coins.

Here in Cali, the subway machines, post office, and many change making machines at schools and whatnot give them out. Banks have them, and give them out of course. I get them from the banks every so often to spend and see if any are in good enough shape to be put in my album if I need them. Most are not, but a few make the cut.
