i may have the chance to buy this coin. it has been graded by pcgs (f15) and I know it is a key date. However I want to make sure I dont over pay and besides going by price guides. I wanted to know if there was a way to search current market value.
by the way it would be for 480.

Retail value by 'book' (Redbook, PCGS, Numismedia, etc) and actual selling prices are often different. For a good idea of what that coin may currently be worth, try an ebay search of completed listings. Also get a free account at Heritage Auctions (www.ha.com) and do a search of current and past auctions there as well. PCGS's CoinFacts is another place to see recent auction prices.

Numismedia (NGC basically) has it listed at F12 for $300 and VF20 for $650. Since this is an "in-between" grade I would second that you should check completed auctions to determine what the "collectors" have been paying for this type/grade of coin. Eye appeal would also play a factor in the price as well. You could have two (or more) of the same grade and one could command a significant difference in price depending on "eye appeal". What does it look like?

with all posted thus far. If the holder is an old generation green label it could very possibly be under graded at F-15. We will need to see pictures.

Not sure how helpful this will be but about a year ago my dad picked up an 1893-CC PCGS F-15 for $375 at a local show. The $375 was greysheet at the time.

Current greysheet is Fine $280 ask Very fine $600 ask
I think F15 would fall between those prices Most dealer will buy back of greysheet and sell Over greysheet. If you work with the same dealer enough you can buy at or near greysheet.
I think with this coin, eye appeal would have a lot to do with how much I would want to pay.

Heritage has offered over 100 of these, graded F12 to F15, in the last 5 years. Two have exceeded $400, neither within $50 of the offered price here. Only a couple others have exceeded $375. Prices are all over the map - timing seems more important than the slab. One of the more expensive was an F12.
Me? I wouldn't spend anything near $480 on an 1883-CC in F15. Not when you can easily get an F12 (be real, what's the difference? Neither are conditional rarities) for well under $300.

Quote: If the holder is an old generation green label it could very possibly be under graded at F-15 Thats a myth imo. If it were true that those old coins would be likely to upgrade because of the holder theyd be sent back in when your talking 100s of dollar differences.

Quote: What are your thoughts: The difference between F12 and F15 is very small, and very variable. I have this one as rather low-end for F15. Seen better, seen worse. It is assuredly not a $400 coin, much less a $480 one. If 1893-CC is an issue you wish to own, look for a good F12 rather than a poor F15. Too many people see the number on the slab with Morgans instead of the coin, and that's driven the price differential in-grade to ludicrous levels sometimes. 1893-CC is such a time.

The obverse is very weak for F-15. Unless it has been raw up until this slab, I'll bet it was cracked out of an old F-12 slab.

Funny you say that. The guy was swearing up and down that if I was to removed it and have it regraded it would come back higher than f15 but he didn't have the time or wanted to put the money into it.
