There's a place right by a busy "park and ride" for commuters going to and from NYC in upstate NY that is mainly just grass with some benches. It's right by what I can only describe as the generators and electrical power station for all the power lines and electricity for a given area. Looks something like this except it's a little bigger:

How-To-Find-Out-Who-Owns-Certain-Spots-Of-Land?

Would this small piece of land by this place of power be owned by the city maybe? I am interested in this piece of land for hunting because it has very old pillars leading to the power station that are remnants of the old town. This place is located in a town that is near 400 years old in relation to European settlers. Any help would be really great. Thanks.

Those are electrical transformers, my friend. Swing your long, conductive rod too close to those, and your next detecting site will be around the Pearly Gates!

Lol, the place I'm referring to is not the site of the transformers, but rather a piece of land next to it about 100 yards away. But I'm still wondering if the city owns that piece of land or where I could even find out who does own it.

Go to the local courthouse and check the tax records. This should be public information. Where I'm at, it can be looked up on the internet through the county's web site.

Even 100 yards away yer gonna have so much EMI in the ground from that station that detecting that piece will drive you nuts.
Anyhow, I always use a county platmap that lists owners of propery in my area.

My county's tax assessor department runs a website with an interactive map that shows who owns what parcels of land in the county. You might check to see if yours has one of those.

I am just wondering if the electric fields set up by the high voltage equipement is enough to give spurious readings on your MD.
Perhaps the best thing to do is to set up a test target and tune the discriminator circuit accordingly.

In Australia, the land under high tension power transmission lines, outside fenced equipment yards, and around towers, is used as open access to the public. So long as you don't illegally venture into areas that are security fenced off for safety, you can hunt anywhere you want around such HV transmission equipment.

Such land is under the administration of the State Government.

My county also has a property map. I use it to scope out municipal land I can hike in - I live deep in acreage hell, and it's amazing how many grown-in paths and passages are around. But they're not much good for detecting, considering my town was only even settled 50 years ago...

I grew up in a railroad boom town that was a few thousand people in 1900 and only 20 people when I grew up there. Anyway there was an old Fort used in the Bushwacker days not far from us. We used to play in the remains of the foundation. I would love to get back there and check that place out. And the blacksmith area right next to the railroad.
