Wow! Slabbed (although ungraded) generic rounds! This makes me wonder if there's anything NGC wouldn't do for money or if anything is actually beneath them. I'm not buying in yet, though. I'm waiting for a NGC MS100 (Perfect Plus 30) graded specimen, which would be commensurate with the egos of those PS bozos. If that isn't forthcoming, I guess I'll just wait a year or two until these things start showing up in the LCS generic tub for $2 over spot.

To me having the "old man" silver round encapsulated by NGC is just another way to wring a few more dollars out of the "Pawn Star" gene. My daughter took a tour of the pawn shop and she got me a "Old Man" silver round which came in a velvet bag. A nice touch for a round that fetched $65 their price, when silver was at $33. It is more of a keepsake than for anything else. Rick and Haus are financial geneses. Come on!!

You're absolutely right. As the old saying goes, "It's all about the money." Your daughter was thoughtful in buying you a momento of her LV trip. That was a nice gesture. As for me -- when I spend $65 on a 1oz piece of silver, I'll opt for a proof ASE from the mint. I think it'll retain its value better than a TV show commemorative round.

I buy a couple of the 'old man' coins every time I go to Vegas. I love the show who cares about the premium.

NGC is certainly making some questionable decisions lately. I dont understand what they think they have to gain grading generic non mint rounds. PCGS will do medals but only if they are from a government mint. Grading non mint bullion just seems to cheapen the slab to me and hopefully PCGS wont follow suit. There are a few private bullion things that I do think could benefit from the TPGs getting into the game. The old pour englehards with their significant premiums for example. The biggest thing I think that would benefit though would be gold bars and large silver bars. I'm not sure how they would do it, maybe a sealed box or something but with all the fake ones out there I do see the potential value of having a TPG certifying that the metal is what it says it is and there isn't filler in the center

BB21--Your suggestion about how the TPG gang could accomplish some good reflects far better thinking than NGC has demonstrated so far. Slabbing tourist souveniers may be great for the tourist traps, but it certainly doesn't do anything to enhance the integrity of the TPG community. NGC should fire their present planning and market development people and hire you to replace them.

This is the second kind of noticeable misstep by ngc. The retro black holders they offered not long ago as special limited edition are back now for the silver eagle sets.
I dont necessarily mind if they get into the private mint stuff, but it should only be reserved for items that have proven to have a high premium standing on their own. The other stuff it just doesn't matter as long as its silver, if someone rips off the old man coin and makes it out of silver if they get it right its still the exact same thing.
Between that and the not so special after all retro holders it seems ngc is willing to cheapen its name a bit for short term financial gain.
