Hi all,
Just curious, what's the biggest resubmit or crack out change in grade you've gotten? Sure some interesting stories are coming!
Thanks.

Interesting Topic. I have never submit a coin to a TPG. The cost of shipping from Canada to USA and back (with all the insurance) is way too much.

I am a little shocked that there isn't a TPG in Canada

Only a point higher, usually I've gotten them back same or lower, only sent one in on a crossover, it didn't make it from SEGS to ANACS and I was surprised on that one. The rest I've sent in after I cracked them out myself.
One CC dollar I had I tried twice, and failed at getting an upgrade, the guy that bought it from me cracked it out and got a MS64 finally I bought it at MS63 tried for the 64 got it back the first time in 62 the second time back in a 63 holder, that's when I quit that game. I believe sometimes TPGs will give a higher grade just based on the volume a dealer or submitter does with them, not blatantly overgraded but for a coin that could go either way the volume submitter spending a lot more money with them will more than likely get the higher end of the grade. IMO only.

The comment below is from Vamworld on the "Hotlips" variety. From my understanding, this Morgan was certified a total of 11 times, eight AU58's and three MS61's (NGC, ANACS and PCGS). Quote: 1888-O VAM-4 NGC MS61, Private Sale $13,000, July 2007 (coin had 5 AU58 PCGS tags, 2 AU58 ANACS tags, 1 MS61 ANACS tag, and 1 AU58 SEGS tags) After 3 consecutive minor conservations and 3 trips to PCGS, the coin made PCGS MS61. 2nd known and top of pop. Offer of $35,000 turned down after making grade. This coin was a lock for Mint State and the toning on the coin made it "look" like it had rub. Not so. This is a case of being persistent when you KNOW the coin is right.

I've never submitted a coin either but I have had a coin or 2 graded F and VF suddenly turn into raw again

I rarely submit coins to TPGs and prefer to crack out most coins that I purchase. I did send a 1922 No D Lincoln to ANACS because so many of these are altered or fakes. Here's what I received After discussion on this forum most agreed that the variety was wrong and so I submitted it to NGC. The rare Die 2 became a much less rare Die 3 and the grade lost 10 points.

For my first iteration of a 7070 type set, I wanted to do it the old-fashioned way: filling holes in the album. So I bought both raw and graded coins, and cracked the graded ones. For my second iteration, I am compiling a slabbed type set, and I have resubmitted some of the coins in my original album. Most of the time, these come back within a grade plus or minus. That is true whether staying within a grading company (PCGS to PCGS) or changing companies (NGC to PCGS). An exception is ICG, which has always come back from NGC or PCGS a grade or two lower - or in a details slab. Of course, I paid less for the coin originally in ICG plastic, so generally these do not represent big losses. Of course, there have been exceptions. My best grade change was an 1809/6 Half Cent, which started out in an old ANACS XF45 slab and came back NGC AU55. You can see it in this thread: https://goccf.com/t/139662On the other hand, my worst was the exact opposite: An 1837 no stars Half Dime, graded AU55 by NGC, came back PCGS XF45. Overall, the experience has convinced me that grading is an opinion, not an objective fact. The grade on the plastic may narrow down the possibilities, but it's the coin inside that matters.

A PCGS slabbed MS64 Hawaiian Commemorative cracked out and put in a Dansco Album. Resubmitted at a later date to NGC and came back UNC (Details - cleaned). A definite never happened. Cracked out of the NGC slab and submitted to PCGS. Came back MS63.

SsuperDdave, well, the NGC price guide for AU55 is $450, the PCGS price guide for XF45 is $310, and Numismedia would seem to agree that I lost about $150 in value. Whether those reflect market values is always up in the air...
However, the mitigating factor is that I bought this coin from David Lawrence in the AU55 holder and paid XF45 money for it. DLC does not sell "bargains," so clearly their graders realized that it was overgraded. Once again, I was reminded to look at the coin, not the holder - but at least the lesson didn't cost me too much!
