For many of us, it would be a real coup to own an exceedingly rare date; e.g., 1877 IHC, 1916-D Mercury, and 1928 Peace $1.

I'm wondering how many people have gone a step further and put together a collection of at least several examples of the same key date, say a set of G-VG-F-VF-XF 1909-SVDBs?

Decades ago, I made up a type of Australian pre decimal coins, where each type was represented by the rarest date for the respective type. Min. grade VF.
That's what you call 'doing it the hard way'.

I know a guy who has a grading set of 1888-O VAM-4 "Hot Lips" Morgans - as VAMs go, that's a key.

I have tried to limit myself to keeping no more than a set number of a certain date... It has not been going well :) I just can't seem to let certain dates go no matter the condition. My plan with most coins is to rotate the worst back out of the collection when I hit the set number and start ending up with "extra" lower grade coins... Just can't seem to let them go though :)

But I think Just Carl has a few key-date multiples.
