If I wanted to go to a local coin shop in my area I had to travel nearly 30 minutes to get there. OK, not earth shattering but still an annoyance.. My son called me while I was on vacation and said 'Dad, there's a coin store only 5 minutes away!' Ok, finally had to go and check it out. The owner's a great guy, him and his wife own the shop. While he didn't have a ton of stock on hand he had some really nice pieces there. He said their still bringing stock in and are planning a grand opening. Picked up an 1875-S Twenty Cent Piece and an 1883-CC GSA Morgan dollar. If you're ever out in the St. John area of Indiana (Northern Indiana) be sure to check out Continental Coin in St. John Plaza... Going back after work today to see what he's added... and no... I'm not the owner, just a happy customer

Good for you! Here's hoping it turns out to be a good shop. A decent LCS (depending on what you're into collecting) can go a long way toward replacing ebay in your life, and IMO--on that count, the further the better. Be sure to put an occasional update post in this thread over the next few weeks/months and let us know how the shop works out and what it turns into being.

Srs, congrats. This is an issue I've had since I started collecting. The stores closest to me are not reputable at all and not really coin stores at all. Finally found one a little further away, but have been very satisfied. I know what you feel like having "discovered" this LCS.

I agree, a good LCS beats ebay pricewise if not always for selection. I am always amazed by the deals I get from my LCS compared to epay prices. You are also lucky to have one so near, mine is in the same city but is still a 30 minute drive away. :/

Quote: Watch your wallet; it could empty pretty quickly. Dave, you're so right.. Went back today and picked up three more coins for the collection. Picked up an 1873 Three Cent Nickel, an 1852 Three Cent Silver and an 1858 Flying Eagle cent.. The best part of the morning trip was as I was looking through the shop a dad and his daughter (who proudly stated she was in first grade) said she was there to buy a Flying Eagle cent. Just made me smile but it got even better... The owner of Continental Coin took her over to a cabinet to look through some circulated coins in 2x2s while her dad was going through the junk silver bin. He found her an 1857 Flying Eagle cent that was in probably VG8 condition and she said oh, she didn't have that much money. I'm telling you it was impossible not to smile while you watched this interaction go. The owner of the shop told her that because she was looking for a Flying Eagle cent he would knock $5 more dollars off the price for her. The little girls dad just smiled and nodded yes to him and she left happy as a lark at her new acquisition. It's truly refreshing to see the young folks enjoying the hobby. She was full of great knowledge (you can tell her dad was helping her) and she was so proud of her collection. I spoke with the owner after they left and told him that what he did with that little girl will go a long way to extending this hobby for all of us and that it was truly nice how he helped her. Truly a great morning was spent in the shop. Yes I put out some more cash for my hobby but it was well worth it just for being able to watch that interaction.

I haven't been to a LCS for over 10 years. When I got back into collecting 2 years ago I called the LCS I used to go to as a kid and he said he's open M-F 10-4 and Saturday by appointment. I usually have to work every Saturday but thought about calling the 1 Saturday a month I have off but it would cut into my CRH. I had off the last 2 weeks and was going to stop but unfortunately had to spend the time working on my latest house I bought last fall. I had to renegotiate my deal at work before I left on vacation after being screwed over for the last 2 years which now requires me to work 3 out of 4 Saturdays a month and 9 hours a weekday which may prevent me from stepping into a LCS for quite some time. Some before and mid reno photos taken last week.

Many small coin stores fail due to lack of customers and that is usually due to relying on walk ins only. If you want to help that store stick around, you might want to suggest he attempts to carry miscellaneous other items that may bring in additional customers. By that I mean coin related items such as Folders, Albums, flips, coin books, etc. A few non coin items may also help keep such stores in buisness. If he has access to the internet, you may want to suggest he contact Whitman for a list of possible books on coins and/or stamps.

His back wall has nothing but supplies, books and other items for the collector. While I'd like to see a better variety, he at least is carrying supplies for his collectors. Him and I spoke for about an hour on Saturday and he is aware of the internet possibilities. We'll see if he follows through. I'm hoping to see him at the coin show in Tinley Park Illinois this Saturday. I picked up a 20c piece as a Father's day present for my dad from him. My dad and I are going together to the show and I plan on giving him the 20c piece on the ride over there. Should be a fun day...
