Bought an 1858 5 cent piece today. Got it for a good price at 10 bucks but it is beat up. When I got it home I started looking at it I noticed that it is quite thin (tough to see through the 2x2 but when I took it out yeah). Everything else looks good on the coin but its almost half the thickness of my 1902 5 cent pieces on which is the next date in my collection.

Just wondering if we know of any fakes for this coin and if this may be one. Looking at my Charlton however the weights should be the same (don't have a scale to check it out). I'd be quite disappointed if it is fake seeing that the I bought it from a dealer at the RA coin show in Ottawa.

Just to note the rim off the coin has been well worn down so maybe this is why?

Some pictures would be helpfull. More pecificly of the obverse, reverse and the side of the coin compared to another 5cent coin that is equally worn if possible.

I will see what I can do, don't think I have anything as worn though. It just seems odd that it is so much narrower. I mean the rim looks to be worn smooth but still would that cause the side to be that much smaller? With considerable wear to I don't see why anyone would counterfeit it as its an AG3 or G4 at best. Some money to be made by making a fake but that much time and effort for such a coin in that shape really, why bother? Ultimately I was just looking to get an example of the date. At the end of the day it was only 10 bucks

Does anybody have an example of a coin that is a lot thinner do to wear, and by that I mean like half the thickness of an unc coin? Looking at my grading books it appears that in such condition it is a possibility but that much, I guess the silver 5 cent coins were small to begin with.
