Okay, I keep looking through this guys listings and coin after coin is MASSIVELY toned. I see slabs all the times saying "altered color" or some such thing. There's no way all these are naturally toned, so how does he do this. He has coins slabbed with no mention of altered colors.
I'm just ranting 'cause I would love to have a few of these but want ORIGINAL coins, not something created like Barry Bonds new skull.
Any thoughts on this

Although I agree that not every single coin (edit: from this seller) is toned naturally, I think that most of them are, or are at least market acceptable. This seller has no coins that are blatantly artificially toned. Sometimes it is hard to differentiate between AT and NT coins and only the ones that are deemed market acceptable by the TPGs will make it into a slab with a grade. Some dealers specialize in cent or silver dollars. This seller specializes in toned coins. There are enough beautifully toned coins coming from this one seller that it is easy to be suspicious. And in a market where there is an increasing number of altered and counterfeit coins, this is a good thing.

I would say all the coins slabbed by NGC gotta be real if there sealed with there label on it. There is a coin shop I visit sometimes and he has this Morgan dollar that he bought its sealed in a clear holder and the obverse is toned a dark orange and the reverse is normal. I want the coin but its not verified original by NGC so it will sit on his shelf.

You know I have a Barber half that has a spot from when it was tested for silver. I stuck it on the window sill covering the other sections with a coin envelope and the spot started shrinking.

Natural toning vs artificial is always a really tricky thing. Theres so many ways you can store a coin and then definitions of artificial toning to begin with. I mean its natural if you put a coin in an environment to tone it as that happens naturally but you clearly wanted that to happen. I think wed all agree its AT if you took a blow torch to it by where do you draw the line for the different environments you can have it in and how do you really really prove one way or another? What if you live near a sulfur mine?

I have bought several coins from this particular seller. He is very open about the coins he sells and will state in the auction listing if the coin is possibly AT. He has also provided me with the background on some of the things I have bought and he takes excellent pics.
@basebal21, some people may call it enviromental damage but I call it beautiful ;)

Mailman, don't get me wrong. I think some of his coins are absolutely stunning, and beautiful.
I realize there is a line with collectors either loving or hating them. I've never bought any of his coins however I want to add a few, not for sets just for their own different beauty. I'm glad your purchases with him went well which is helpful to me. I guess his "methods" of coloring are not objectionable to the TPGs, at least it doesn't appear to from what are on his auctions.

Keep in mind, it's pretty easy to tone a coin in a TPG slab. They're not airtight. So, the presence of a slab is absolutely no guarantee.

Im not a fan of the majority of toning myself, but I agree with you if you like it you like it. I'm sure theres a good number of people that dont really care how it got toned just that it did and they like it

You do know that TPG slabs are not airtight, and it is quite easy to artificailly tone coins in slabs right? Usually done by placing the slab along with some chemicals or gasses into a larger container that is sealed, sometimes heated not hot but warmed enough to make the chemical reaction process begin. Tricky because it can also ruin a coin and slab, but done by those in the know it can produce a very natural looking toning. Coin World newspaper had a front page article about this many years ago, I saved it but now can't find it.

Not saying his coins are all AT but I think a majority of the modern ones may be or at least should be suspect.
