What's with the new feature where when you open a listing, a message pops up saying that 1 person has viewed/inquired/watched this item in the past x hours. What use is it?

I've decided it's whole purpose is to create confusion and anxiety. All it really does is inform you that other people use ebay too.

What I get out of it, is that others have interest in the item and that you better grab it before someone else does...providing it's a "Buy It Now".

Its basically to drive interest in items, you might not wait as long if you know a lot of people are looking at it as a buy it now listing
Rest in Peace

Exactly. At least it is easy to ignore though.

I find it more HELPFUl to know how many actual humans have added an item to watchlist....

I scored a rare AFA 90 (Action figure authority) imperial gunner other day. In la-men coin grading terms that would be like an MS-70, as good as it gets....

The gunner had it made cool suit, big with lady's and had gravy job. He ran the triple laser beam thing-o-ma-giggy on the Death STAR which blew up planets like that stubborn lady with buns on her head. Even though he was day late and dollar short when the blonde haired farm boy from the desert planet put a bomb down that exhaust port which was about a meter in diameter, or just like shooting womp rats back home....

Scored that bad boy for like 160 or so and new I had something special as it drew bid in fast at 225 and a 2nd bid now and 28 watchers....

Sure many use watchlists just too gauge prices, but I can seriously tell when an item is about to sell, via watch list totals. Once it passes 5 watchers its in danger sell zone....

But then sometimes I will have a cool item listed for a WEEK no watchers thinking I struck out, then it sells 30 minutes later instant pay no watchers, so just never know what forces one to make that commitment to click buy it now....

Yes, ebay implemented this feature because tests show that it improves sales by increasing buyer anxiety.

Way to go ebay.

Heck I know people are using ebay, I remember reading an article in FastCompany magazine in the early 2000's that said ebay had one million bids per minute and more than 1 billion items sold, so I started buying stock then and there. Made a bundle off of it when I sold before 9/11 too.

But this new "feature" is kind of irritating if you ask me, a total sales gimmick, to get you to bid (high) that moment.
