Hi,

I've been coin roll hunting in the US and have found alot of Canadian coins. I've kept them and have started filling out some Canadian albums. When I visit Canada this year I was thinking of getting some Canadian rolls. What kind of luck has anyone had here searching Canadian rolls for older and/or silver coins? Thanks.

For older coins your best bet would be 1 cent and 5 cent as there is still George VI to be found in them (1937 onward) 1 cent rolls are also a sure bet to find some US wheat cents as well. As far as silver goes it would be in 10 cent rolls but they are few and far betwwen.

In two years of coin roll hunting, here's what I've found (approximately):

pennies - wheats (1 in 1000), Geo VI (1 in 1500), foreign (1 in 2000)
nickels - Jeffersons (1 or two in each roll, none before 1960 though), Geo VI (1 in 1000), foreign (3 in two years - 2 twenty pence from UK, 1 five cent Bermuda)
dimes - Roosevelts (1 in 100 or so), 4 silver dimes in 2 years, NO 1970 dimes! :(

I'm glad I don't get my rolls from where you get your rolls.

Thanks that's pretty interesting. Based on those numbers I'd say roll hunting in the U.S. for silver/oldies is easier. Anyone have better luck?

Silver, nah! Only found 2, both in the same roll. They were a 1968 silver dime and a 1967 commem. dime. As for old pennies, they are abundant if you get enough rolls. I say the odds are a little better for me compared to Topher's. I've found the years of 39(2),40(2), 43, 46,47,48,51,54,55(2),56(2),57,58(3),59(2),60,61 and a whole bunch of the 67 commems. Nickels, I've only found one keeper, a 1950 George VI in my first ever try. If you withdraw rolls of quarters, you're in for a bunch of commemoratives. You will pull at least 5-10 reverse varieties in just 2 rolls of 25 cents. Hope that helps.

That's some good information. Are Canadian banks OK with giving boxes of rolled coins out to non-customers? Some U.S. banks don't do it, but most I've encountered are OK with it.

kestreliam it depends on the bank. My usual bank doesn't have boxes as they're in an older, established neighbourhood and don't go through coins all that quick. They do get older people turning in rolls, which are prime for searching, though. I have found an RBC two doors down the road from my workplace that does. Both banks know me pretty well, and are happy to oblige. The RBC even gave me an extra 1c box a couple of times when I was taking mixed coinage home. I use them now to help keep all these coins sorted at home.

The coin boxes are good for storing rolled coins as they are very sturdy. They make great shipping boxes also. If you need more boxes a good source would be grocery stores as they get in a lot of coin. Asking the manager to set some aside for you would work as they just end up in the cardboard compactor anyways. The $1.00 boxes are excellent for storing 2X2's.

This may be too late for your visit into Canada but just a little info on rolls. Recently I had gone throught bricks(boxes) of CDN nickels to collect only CDN nickels from 1981 and under because they could be sold for .20 cents each beacuse of their nickel content. Out of every 4 boxes (each box has 50 rolls @2.00 face total box cost $100.00 cdn) I could get 1 box of pre 1981. Also approximately 20 rolls of US nickels, 4 rolls of 1967 centennial rabbit nickels, and 20 rolls of cdn nickels prior 1950. Also a good hanful of misc. foreign money people sneak in.
The best rolls to get are from small outlets where people bring in their own rolled money. At the banks you tend to get newer coinage.
Hope this helps. I have also received rolled quarters of all of the 1999 and 2000 BU millenium quarters. Junk silver is getting rare in rolls but usually ther is more than 1 in the roll if you find it.
Good luck hunting.
