The
Royal Canadian Mint's newest sterling silver coin pays tribute to Niagara Falls' mighty cataracts and a photographic pioneer who captured it on film more than a hundred years ago.
The coin - it has a $30 face value - features the falls and commemorates the invention of the panoramic camera by Canadian John R.
Connon in 1882. Connon's invention could photograph the view in 360 degrees.
The coin will retail for $84.95 and its mintage will be limited to 15,000, the mint's communications manager, Alexandre Reeves, said in an e-mail to The Tribune.
The coin can be purchased directly from the mint by calling 1-800-267-1871 or online at
www.mint.ca.
The mint is not associated with local coin dealers in Niagara Falls. The 2007 coin will be presented Saturday to Niagara Falls Mayor Ted Salci, at an event to be attended by members of the Canadian Numismatic Association.
