Since there is HUGE variation in price between 1798 and 1799 I will bet the experts wait until the end of the auction to weigh in (if they know something we don't and want to keep the price down ) Most forums have a rule against posting live auctions for that very reason.

The only purpose of such a rule would be to help ensure that a seller who doesn't quite know what they have doesn't quite get the price they deserve. Not sure I like that idea.

Thanks, amida. Not sure I would commit to S-187 (is S-180 possible?), but a lot fewer options for 1799 die varieties; don't think this fits for a 1799. And excuse me; the other possible purpose for jack jeckel's rule would be to ensure that someone who does know what they have (like a 1798 large cent) could claim the possibility of something more valuable (like a 1799), and get a higher price than they deserve. Perhaps by taking their pictures through the glare of a 2x2...

I don't think this seller is meaning to deceive, just hopeful. Not coin a seller. Their response to my email was "so 1798 and 1799 had different reverses?"
I did a photo overlay and both the reverse and obverse matched S-187. That variety has the dropped C on the reverse and date and legend positions very close to 1799 varieties. I can see it passing for 1799 if you don't dig deep.

I don't know if it is a S-187, but I would say it is not a 1799.

Hi Conder- I was first going by the dropped berry closest to the O in ONE. That is the distinguishing feature of S-187.

The seller handled this with grace; he acknowledged the evidence that it is a 1798, and notified the bidders. Kudos!

Yes, they did the right thing. In this particular case, because they did very explicitly state that they weren't sure, I would have been fine with them leaving it up. They had great pictures and anyone who would pay big money for a common 1798 deserves it. They even emailed all the buyers and posted a note on the listing and still got new bids!

It looks like it's the 1798 date to me.
