This was one heck of a challenge. Forked out enough money and I don't really want to remember how much this costed me. Not into varieties so I've left them out.

The last two coins that I needed was 1927 and 1969 5 kopek, which is interesting as they are semi key dates. The toughest 5 kopek coins are 1934, 1933, 1935 (old type), 1927, 1970, 1971 and 1990 M. Some key dates are in low grade - figured that if I buy the low grades first, I can always upgrade them later. Still struggle to find better ones.

Here are the two coins that I couldn't fit in my virtual coin album design.

I don't think I can duplicate this set - a rather difficult set. Now to complete the rest of the other Soviet coins, perhaps 50 kopek. I think I'm missing just one coin for this and it's NOT a key date either. You'll be surprised to find out a lot of Soviet coins from 1965 - 1975 are getting difficult to find all of a sudden despite what the catalog value says.

This is a really cool set to have put together. Well done - I think the challenge and achievement is it's own reward (as well has having the coins) :)

Are the Russians seeing old coins as a way of making a quick buck or two, or are these coins just not around any more? I once went looking for older UK 50ps and couldn't find them in the UK, because dealers didn't bother with them.

If you need something relatively common and reasonably recent (legal to export), I might try to look for it at markets (Taganka, Vernisage, maybe Hobby Center) and send it to you if I manage to find anything. Would probably cost a ridiculous amount in postage though

And, that set is really cool! Especially the 1990-M (which I always thought was some sort of mint error, or maybe pattern - as of course everyone knows that putting mints on Soviet coinage only started in 1991).

augsburger - some key dates are just scarce. A lot of the earlier coins struck before 1961 were culled as they were revalued from 10 : 1. A lot of people would have sent them for exchange to the new ruble.

Some years in particular coins 1965 - 1975 can only be found in mint sets which makes this very difficult. As of why, I don't know. Maybe there were too many coins in struck in 1961 - 1964 and commemorative coins in 1967 and that didn't require a lot of coins during those 10 years.

5 kopek is actually an interesting denomination - this was the fare used to travel around Moscow metro.

January1may - there's a 1990-M 10 kopek which I am still looking for. It just seems Moscow Mint has produced more error coins compared to Leningrad / St. Petersburg Mint. You'll be suprised to know that sometimes it's cheaper to buy from ebay than in Russia especially some of the tougher years. I've sold some of my duplicates to people over in Russia.

It 's not so exceptional to find national coins valued higher on the domestic market than abroad. That especially counts for the previous coinage used. This idea is deep rooted throughout continental Europe where there always has been a previous currency preceding the various national currencies that were switched over to the Euro.
