Hello. Is this just a worn dirty quarter or lamination error? The pics don't show it well but it has a reddish color to it in hand. Thanks for the opinions!

Here is the edge of this 81 quarter against an 82 facing the same directions. Notice the difference with the copper clad layer is the opposite on the 81 from the 82.

Thanks John! But what is up with that clad? Were the layers different between the 1981 and 1982? Those quarters are facing the same direction and the copper in them is opposite of each other.

There is no difference in the clad planchets but the core can appear to be closer to one side or the other. When a blank is punched from the metal stock sheet, the upper nickel layer will be pushed down a bit over the copper core so it appears that the copper is not in the center of the coin.
