RCM has minted for 77 different countries. Have you checked the weight and magnetism? 1996 - 7.3g and 28mm.

The German planchet toonies are described in Charlton. I have sent two to cccs which I thought were German and I was wrong both times. I have two more to send with the next batch and I second guess myself every time I look at them.

Isn't the reverse of the toonie on German Planchet different?

Impossible to tell, without the coins in hand, and proper light. I only felt confident in identifying German planchets after going through an entire mint box of 1996 twoonies with t_y beside me...

SPP....let us in on the secret. I know what the Charlton Cat says but what do you look for in determining whether or not its a german planchet. Anything I have ever seen or read is very veg on what to really look for

Since we're on the subject of German planchet twonies. The 2013 Charlton's says 10 million were struck, previous editions show a mintage of 60 million. Is this a typo?

the premium on these coins has also dropped quite a bit because of the minimal differences and that less people seem to be looking for them. Those 1996 toonies are pretty dogged up after hitting circulation.

1. The number of German planchets contracted by the RCM was between 5 and 10 million. 2. It is impossible to say if the coins posted in this thread are German or Canadian 3. I am reviewing the article on German planchets that I intend to send to the CNA journal. it will be on its way to the editor in the beginning of July. 4. I think prices are low for a couple of reasons: first, the coin is not rare; second, people don't know the difference; third, ICCS does not label the planchet; fourth, there are less collectors interested in twoonies than in dimes.

I will be looking forward to reading the article!
Didn't realise that ICCS wouldn't acknowledge it. Why would that be I wonder?

Spoke with Brian about the issue. The problem is not expertise but the time needed to identify the variety.
Most of the (veeeery few) twoonies with planchet identification in ICCS holders are incorrectly assigned. I sent back 2 "Germans" for correction.
