Yesterday I picked up the big cardboard box I "won" from a liquidation sale.. (coin/stamp store) I placed my bids online, and didn't exactly know what to expect in the lot..

Some really nice things showed up.. Also a nice box with 5 Byzantine coins.. These are out of my comfort zone, so I thought maybe nice to show them at CCF..

Here is the first..

DISCLAIMER: I am a complete noob with Byzantines but I'm sure someone else will be along shortly to help out.

What an interesting coin! Looks like it was overstruck/doublestruck?

It may be from the reign of John I (969-976 AD), Basil II, or Constantine VIII, all of whom issued coins with obverses similar to your coin. I didn't scrutinize the reverses. Maybe this will get you in the right ballpark though.

Compare it to this coin of Basil II:

Thanks for the reply.. Coming week I have no time to do research for these interesting coins.. But the week after that , plenty..

Hopefully I sell some of the other stuff for a good price so I can keep this nice batch of Byzantines.. I had a deal with my girlfriend, that I would sell the stuff until I hit the 'break-even' point.. There is also a box with 6 nice looking Roman coins..

Some of the things I sell for sure, are colorized coins from North Korea, Palau and Malawi... Really don't like that kind of coins..

Here's number 2

The next coin is a half follis of Justinian I regnal year 23, with NI below the K for Nicomedia mint. It is Sear # 203.

The next one is a half follis of what appears to be the emperor Phocas from the Constantinople mint officina A. Sear #642

The last one is a follis of Justin II and Sophia from the Constantinople mint officinal B. Sear # 360

Very nice group of coins.

The 2nd one look to be struck twice.. Or over struck?

Looks like an overstrike to me.

From a Harlan J. Berk "Byzantine Coins" auction catalog, December 7, 1989 (thanks, Ancientnoob!):

"By the start of the 7th century AD such parsimonious practices as overstriking old coins instead of making new flans was becoming commonplace."

Whether it is value+, value-, or neutral... no idea. I think it's a pretty cool coin though!

It was a common practice back than to see coins struck over an older coin.
