I cherry picked this very nice looking 1888-P VAM4A a while back and recently got it back from NGC. It's a R6 and I cannot find ANY historical price fetching on it (even on Heritage Auctions). SuperDave et al, could you give me any idea on its value? Help much appreciated. Paleoguy

That's going to be a tough call, since (as you've noticed) there's no real history on it. Rarity ratings are estimates at best, and bear no relationship with what it may or may not actually be worth. At the moment, I couldn't see it fetching any premium at MS62.

May 11 one sold at Heritage for 89.00 and a second at telatrade for 93.00 with the B/P for both they where also NGC MS-64's. A PCGS 64 sold for 105.00 on E Bay 3 mo ago. Based on what most nice MS-64 88 sell for I think its a set filler with no real prem.

Thanks for the links twohawks. Those are all nice coins, however they are the VAM4 variety and not the VAM4A (with reverse die clashes). The 4A is guesstimated (per SuperDave) to be a R6 in rarity while the VAM4 is only a R4. I may be wrong, but I have not found an attributed 4A to be sold in any of the standard venues (Heritage, ebay, Stacks, etc.). As an aside, total NGC population for this variety in all grades is only 15 with 8 being higher than the 62. PG

The PCGS ms-64 in the flat holder is a late 4a
The NGC ms-64 looks like a V-4
The 3rd is a mid V-4a with no Q's
the 4th D Law coin is a Vam-4a as well

Only ANACS plus Vam-4a on the holder PCGS they are labled V-4 and NGC just started to lable the A type so the pop report s are not correct. Solid grade in this VAM is hard to find and VAM view full retail in PCGS plastic is 190.00 The Interest in this one is not high due to the fact its found in good upper grade without much looking.

I am not trying to down grade your find they are a need VAM. Its just has no real following, so the Interest is low.

I yield to the power. Thanks much for the info. VAM hunting is quite a fun sport. My second 1878-S VAM50 (Triple eyelid or Lava Wing depending on the grader) is in for grading now. Those were great "ah ha! moment" finds.
