Got a great description and was able to identify my coin as a 1902 ) VAM 23 with help from Vamworld.com However I have strong doubling on "In God We trust", and they make no mention of this. Anyone else come across this one? Thanks |

That could be (probably is) Die Deterioration or possibly Machine Doubling. We have a member here who is as good with 1902-O as anyone around; I'll drop him a message and see if I can get him to have a look. |

Doubling on the reverse is pretty common with 1902-O two olive (C4/C3)reverse dies.

I will not be able to add much. If indeed you have a V23, it does have the C4/C3 reverse. This means that a C3 die was re-hubbed with a C4 reverse hub. Even just a little bit of mis-alignment in the re-hubbing process creates a lot of reverse doubling. While this is interesting, the C4 reverse hub comes with it's own doubling (built in). So yes, C4/C3 reverses are well known for reverse doubling both from the "mother C4 hub", and from the re-hubbing process. This is one of the reasons why I studied the 1902-Os extensively. While mention of the reverse doubling can be found in many VAM descriptions (including the V23), they really don't help much with attribution since there are so many, and the doubling is extensive to begin with and mind numbing. I don't want to start anything, but your coin does not have the signature die crack on the reverse of the V23.? Your coin does have either a crack or die scratch at the tops of ES of STATES, which the V23 doesn't have. There are a number of doubled ears in the 02-O SEries. You might want to look a bit longer. |

By the way, if you would like help, give me a shot of the date placement, mint mark placement, olive berries, and tell me if Liberty's profile is doubled. A shot of the doubled ear would also help.

Cracks can be progressive. Both my LDS and MDS examples have this crack at the left wing tip, and do not have the crack/scratch at ES of STATES like your coin has. The VAM-42 is very similar to the VAM-23. Did you look at that one? Hope this helps.  |

Thank You everyone for all of the feedback. I've been away from the computer for a few days. I'll take a little closer look at it and try to post some better pics. Maybe one day I'll have enough knowledge enough to return the favor.
