Once a coin has been graded by a TPG is there an expiration on how long it is valid for?

Nope. But if grading standards change as they did a few years ago, people break out the coins and resubmit in hopes for a higher grade.

At NGC the color grades for copper are only valid for 10 years. At PCGS the color grades are not guaranteed/valid at all.

i also heard (might be an urban legend) that a lincoln memorial (zinc) cent was graded MS 70 and sold for several thousand dollars at auction. over time it began to deteriorate in the slab holder. its value droped to literally $0.01. I dont actually know that it's a fact but I have heard of the story.

That has happened before. Usually the TPG who graded it will buy it back at FMV before the 'deterioration'.

Quote: Really they buy it back when its only worth face value? PCGS and NGC as well, not sure about ANACS will buy back coins if they no longer match their grades. There are some exceptions to that and NGC seems to backing away from guaranteeing their varities, but for the most part they do stand behind their work.

One of the TPG's has recently announced that their guarantee will not cover coins that turn after the are slabbed. Just reviewed the NGC guarantee, and copper, bronze, and copper nickel coins graded before April 1 2000, are not covered under their guarantee, and the guarantee for coins in these metals slabbed after that date expires after 10 years. The NGC guarantee does not cover coins that have turned (spotted, hazed, other deterioration) after they were slabbed. (So if your PF-70 ASE milkspots you are out of luck, the guarantee does not apply.) Reviewed the PCGS guarantee and it also no longer guarantees coins that turn in the holder after slabbing.

As to any guarantee, warantee, etc. remember that regardless of what they say, tell you or even put in writting, if out of buisness, then what. Any TPG could guarantee anything but if they go out of buisness, so goes the guarantee. Quote:Once a coin has been graded by a TPG is there an expiration on how long it is valid for? I wonder if you sent in a chocolate coin and got it graded and slabbed, just how long would that guarantee last?
