I was watching Gangs Of New York last night - a story which takes place during the American Civil War. During a gambling scene, there was a half-second shot of the table. I freeze-framed the movie and snapped this image. I wonder if the director collects coins, or is just picky about details.

OK, let me get this straight. You saw a half-second exposure, had the idea what to do, nailed it to the exact millisecond, captured a frame and postprocessed it to look perfect here. You'll do just fine in this place.

Scorsese was, apparently, extremely focused on historical accuracy for this movie. It's not at all hard to imagine he'd have ensured period-appropriate coinage, although we can assume it's fake.

That's cool, and nice work. I believe the movie was supposed to be mostly set in 1863.

The climax was during the New York Draft Riots, July 13-16, 1863.

Looks like the dollar coin has a motto above the eagle which was first used for the 1866 issue. So, they're just a little off for a scene set in 1863. Still, I award difficulty points for selecting EF to AU pieces since nearly-new Seated coins are likely what you would see in Civil War-era pocket change.

Good catch on the motto. Looks like an 1864 date on one of the Half Dimes.

My wife had a good laugh over SsuperDdave's comments.

I think I see 1866 on one of the coins. So very close to accurate. Definitely commendable, never even noticed that in the movie. You will fit in well here.

Cool! Something I have never really paid close attention to in movies

From SsuperDave: "...... although we can assume it's fake."

Are they fake, and can we tell? It would be even more cool if real coins were used
