Have been thinking lately about selling off almost all of my collection except for Morgans. I am wondering if the community collects just one coin or a little of everything. I am in the category of having about 50-90% of all the Dansco's filled and just muddle along with it. I have a list I keep on me at all times of all the key coins I need to fill the books. I am thinking about just selling off all the buffalo's,mercs, walkers, large cents, sm cents, yadda yadda...... and just go crazy on my true passion, the Morgan dollar. Are there others out there like me with collection heading in too many directions? Just curious

I collect nearly every type of coin no matter what the country of origin may be. Morgans and Merc's are my favorite by far. I go through phases, I may be on the lookout for large cents for a few weeks, then the next thing you know I am looking for pre 1900 foreign coinage to add to my collection. It is your collection so you must do what ever will make you happy. If it is selling off everything else and perusing just Morgans then so be it, no worries.

I have 1 to 3 active areas of collection, then I finish that out and start something new. For example, I recently finished proof Jeffersons and SBA dollars. Now I'm working on MS Washington quarters and a complete set of Texas Commemorative halves. In the background, I'm always working on classic silver commems because I consider that a "20-year set" that won't be finished soon. As I "finish" a set (move it off the active list because I'm satisfied with its current state), I don't usually "sell it off" like you're describing, but there is a lot of "detritus" I can sell off, such as doubles or spare albums. That being said, I often read forum members discussions about changing direction in their collection because they have a new interest. Do what you like! One of the things I like about coin collecting is that my collection is much more liquid that many hobbies. I won't get back 100% of what I paid (though some I will get much more!!), but I will do better than someone whose hobby is baseball cards, stamps, watching movies, sports, etc.

Already started putting stuff on CL, made my decision. Reinvest any $$$ back into Morgans.

My interests are all over the place and I dabble in a lot of things with some main areas of interest.
With that said I'm a firm believer in selling things if you decide you like something better and want to increase funds for your main areas of interest.
If Morgans are your true passion I think youll be very happy with the extra purchasing power for them

"Are there others out there like me with collection heading in too many directions?" Too many directions is a matter of personal preference. If you want of focus on your Morgans than go ahead. This is supposed to be fun and if you feel like you are being pulled in to many directions than you are not going to enjoy it. That being said, my collection is a huge assortment of round shiny things I am interested in.

So there are a couple of thoughts that rattle around in the back of my head... One is when I was talking to a coin dealer about helping to sell a family collection. He asked, "Is it a collection or an accumulation?" In other words, did he just amass coins he thought were neat, or was he collecting with some sort of purpose or organization? I try to organize my collection. In fact, the record keeping, organizing, arranging are part of the fun. The second is from a book I read by a fellow who collected opium paraphernalia. He claims there are two types of collectors: those who want to get their hands on everything and those who want to acquire pieces to study and appreciate them. Collectors in the second category don't buy something then stash it away, they learn about it, they let the item enrich their lives somehow. For many of these collectors, sharing their knowledge is an important part of their hobby. So, if I find that some items are merely accumulated, I don't really care about them, I haven't looked at them or even thought about them in an extended period of time, they go into a pile for giving away or selling on ebay.

I think consolidation is a great idea. Is this one of yours?

Quote: my collection is a huge assortment of round shiny things I am interested in. And some are not so shiny and that's the way I like them. You can fill a room with coin collectors and no two will be actively collecting exactly the same coins. That's what makes coin collecting so fun, you can collect what you like and not be restricted to what others think you should collect. Ed ANA LM-3175

Have never sold a coin in over 60 years of collecting. I have given some away to help YN's get started. Just can't see getting rid of coins. Now with well over 100 Albums and mostly full, I still need more, more, more.
