I am new to the ebay thing and am usually happy with how things arrive, however today I received 2 packages from to different sellers and was wondering what I should do. make no mistake both items were good value but I am unhappy with have got items that have been damaged (imo) in transit due to lazy packing. as you can see they have taped the coins directly to the cardboard covering them in the tape glue and one has even packed them lose to scratch the crap out of each other. so what should I do? I am worried about neg rep as they may buy an item of me to retaliate etc and I am trying to establish myself on ebay to sell the coins I don't want to buy the ones I do

Hmmm... can you post a link to the ebay listing? If they were being sold as bullion, I wouldn't really have a problem, but if they were advertised as more, it might be worth letting the seller know why that's a bad idea.

Looks like an ordinary junk silver lot to me. If you thought you would be getting coins that you could sell individually, I think your expectations were too high. Junk silver bins at coin shops and shows have loose coins that all get banged together every time someone digs through them.

Both offer a 7 day money back policy. Why not just return them?

You mentioned that the items were good value so to me you need to decide if the damage overrides the savings. If you got a good enough deal even with the tape they could be worth keeping, if not I would return them.

Stickytape residue stuck to a coin is annoying in that you have to go to considerable effort to remove it, but it is not "damage" in terms of being irreversible. Stickytape residue can easily be removed without destroying the toning. If it were me and the sticky stuff was the only problem, I'd clean the residue off with acetone or something similar and leave a "soft positive" feedback, commenting on the poor shipping method.
If the coins were actually damaged (scratched, bent, polished etc) then I'd have an issue.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

The lot with the first link you provided, you paid over double the spot value, and the listing claims that they are collectible, not junk. It might be worth contacting the seller and expressing your displeasure in the packaging of the coins. The seller might offer a partial refund because the amount is so small. The second link shows a lot that you paid almost $12 under spot. Judging from the photos, I would say this was intended as a junk silver lot, and therefore you made out quite well. In either case the use of acetone would most likely take off any residue left behind by the tape without changing the appearance of the coins. So I guess it would be your call. I think contacting them before you leave feedback is always a good thing to do. As you state, you are wanting to establish yourself on ebay, wouldn't you want a buyer to contact you first rather than just throwing up a negative feedback comment?

I would just send them a friendly note about how you got the coins and they were fine but you would suggest not taping the coins directly as a lot of people dont want their coins like that. All you can really do is give them a heads up and if they want to take the advice they will if not you did what you could.

I agree with basebal21. Do the seller a favor and let them know their packaging is not good and let it go at that. A brief note in the feedback that packing was sub-standard is justified but I would not dock any Stars.

It looks to me like the seller was trying to keep the shipping package (was it an envelope of some sort?) as flat as possible and also trying to keep the coins from rattling around and thus advertising that there are COINS in the package. Did the stick-um on the tape actually come off on some of the coins? It seems to me that unless the package got really warm or the coins were in contact with the tape for a long time it should not have been too much of an issue. Regardless, I'd still let the shipper know it's not a good idea to do that.

The sellers need some help and a kind email on how to package coins and the why is hopefully going to be a benefit to a lot of other buyers down the track.
The price of a few zip lock bags at 1c each and taped so each coin is held securely and separately is just to easy.
We posted some coins to ourselves to see how our packaging held up through the mailing system.
A lot of our buyers seem to buy a low cost item 1st to see how our packaging etc works out.
Packaging is just so important.

I haven't had too much luck getting the sticky stuff of with acetone but alcohol gets it off followed by a distilled water rinse.
