Shipping is going to cost a good amount no matter what you do. I would suggest just finding whatever you can with tracking and the cost is just kind of what it is. You cant make it any cheaper than they charge.
I would highly recommend tracking though since those packages go through the airport usually and are a prime target for someone to take with no tracking knowing its impossible to pinpoint where it happened.

I would just say to keep in mind that whatever you send it as its going to go through customs who can confiscate whatever they want.
I would pack it well, a small box and bubble wrap or bubble mailers should be fine Id imagine. If I remember right you have to use the special brown tape the post office has for international shipping, at least going out of the US anyway instead of the clear packing tape or they make you cover it.

Quote: can I send it as a document? You can send it anyway you want. Just remember if customs decides to open your package and the contents do not match what was declared, you will never see that coin again, nor will the person that bought it. Postage is a cost of doing business. You need to decide who is going to pay that cost. Will you pay the shipping charges so your buyer can enjoy "free shipping?" Will you split the cost with your buyer? Or will you charge them for all of it? The choice is yours. Whatever you decide, stick with it. Do not forget the costs of shipping materials. For me, here in the states, I can ship around 5 coins for $1.69 through ebay. This comes with delivery confirmation. The same package sent to Australia, will cost me $6.15, without any delivery confirmation. I shipp all of my coins in a small ziptop baggie. Inside the baggie the coin is in either a 2x2 or mylar flip. I stick the baggie inside the folded packing slip, and all of that goes inside of a #000 bubble mailer. I have had no problems shipping here locally, or all the way "down under." For stateside transactions I charge $2.50 shipping. This covers the actual postage, plus all my expenses like the bubble mailer, the baggie, the sheet of paper for the packing list, the 2x2 or flip, and the label that the postage is printed on. I have never had anyone complain my shipping is to high.

I would not send it as a document. When you go to the PO, they'll ask you to fill out a 'customs declaration" and whatever you put on it don't use 'coins'.
Numismatic collectibles, Hobby supplies, metal discs, obsolete metal tokens are some of the ‘still correct' but more obscure terms people regularly use.
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

Cost & waittime is a bit of a pain, but I've never been disappointed with any B/S/T with members here. I try to pack as much as possible into each shipment & vice-versa. Always above & beyond, those Ozzies got it going on.

We have our own insurance built into the cost of our lots. Australia international PO insurance costs heaps and you get no coverage at all with the recent changes.
We have also banned many countries and we will just not do business with them.
Australia Post has been hit hard by countries that we have banned but Australia Post can not pick and choose. So now we have no such thing as international PO insurance.
Australia to the USA has been our safest international mailing destination and Germany our worst.

Most countries we have had trouble with mail going missing once or twice but Germany has been outragest.
Trouble to the point we were going to ban Germany but we have some very good customers there and they are very good to us.

Pack and Track to Germany from Australia is $23.70 or $44.05 500gm to 1kg (1.1lbs to 2.2lbs) Extra cover is not available with this service or Reg Mail.
So no we do not know where the mail is going missing.

Cost helps when the Australian AU$1 is at US$ 80c. And Australia needs our Dollar to be at that rate across the board to make international sales work. That is the way it has always been.
With the drop on the "little Aussie bleeder" from AU$1 = US$1.07 to AU$1 = US$92c We have had a big increase in international sales. It is nice to see a small return to a healthy world market. Some countries I think are now going to stay at their dreadful financial falls and continue to be a new collection of 3rd world countries. Unthinkable 10 years ago!
Sadly our international mailing rates are over the top! It makes it very hard to do business internationally with a strong Australian Dollar. I do believe that our dollar is going to back to very high rates again. The world is still not stable enough to hold a weaker AU$.
