I would like to get a scale, primarily for weighing coins to determine their content (for example, determining if a coin is steel or silver or zinc etc.) Can anyone recommend a scale and point me in the right direction as far as where to buy it online? I should mention that I am not looking to drop hundreds of dollars or something super advanced at this point.

Thanks!

While a bit strange and possibly awkward, if you have a head shop that sells tobacco pipes etc in your area, they usually have them. The one near me where I purchased mine had a countertop full of digital scales starting at 9.99-14.99. Works perfect for coins and most at that price weigh up to 500 grams in tenth of a gram increments.

I believe in NYC it is illegal to carry a scale like what you described on your person, as drug dealers use them. Not kidding lol.

Make sure it goes down to 0.01 not 0.1.Brand doesn't really matter.Shop around,ebay-amazon or what ever.

When I was wrestling with the same question a while ago, I looked at what could be found on Amazon and ebay, read many reviews, got perplexed and totally
bogged down while trying to choose a direction in the jungle of numerous and widely differing products and reviews of them.

Then I had a brainstorm. I told my main contact at my LCS what I needed a scale to do, what degree of sophistication and accuracy I needed and asked for
his advice. In under two seconds after listening to me, he grabbed a little digital coin scale from under the counter an slid it over the counter to me. It's a modest
little Cheap-O that goes down to the tenth of a gram (which is all I need) & weighs things in grams, grains, ounces and troy ounces. It cost me >$20 and it's worked
like a champ ever since I took it home.

Moral of my story--"Simplify." I'd suggest checking in with your LCS. Chances are good they have exactly what you need for a reasonable price and that it's a
brand and model that they consider to be a proven performer that's worth what they're selling it for.

Edit: Question to John1--When you mention going "down to .01 and not .1" do you mean a .01 of an ounce or .01 of a gram?

Years ago my sister and her husband bought me a second hand Cent-O-Gram scale. [OHaus]
Calibrated down to 1/100 of a gram, it was used in school laboratories and perhaps professional labs as well.
Most likely chemistry class.
Never needs batteries, but not at all portable.

I used pocket change to test it out against the weights given in the Red Book.
Quite accurate.

This link will show examples currently for sale on ebay:

+1 on harbor freight...but if you go to a store in person, you have to ask at the counter, they don't keep them out on the floor. They call them "crack dealer scales" no joke....and they only sell them to people who ask that way they can ID anyone who buys one.
