I think my pictures have improved a lot, but I was wondering if you guys agree. Also, I was wondering if these pictures would be considered good enough to determine grades with.

Thanks for any input. My set up is a couple lamps with 40W 120V halogen bulbs, with my camera, a tripod, and a magnifying glass that I shoot through. I think it is like a 4x glass.

On the cent it looks a bit out of focus and if the back round is white your white balance if out of adjustment.

Thanks for the fast reply John. The background is suppose to be white. Any suggestions on how to possible fix that? Is it a camera setting or something I am doing wrong?

Lighting will have a lot to do with color of coin and background. Your new set up is better than the Ike photo but still not razor sharp.

Okay, I will mess around with adjusting the lighting. How bright of bulbs should I use? Sometimes I have issues with to much light washing out the detail. I can't shoot in natural sunlight which I know a lot of people recommend.

Concentrate on getting the focus right first. We can worry about color later; that's easily corrected after the fact. Chances are you'll be able to adjust the camera's White Balance setting to get that, but it's less important than the focus.

So. How are you relating the magnifier to the camera? Handholding it? This could be the problem. What's the distance from the camera to the coin (not including the magnifier)? How close is the magnifier to the camera?

Are you using the camera's Macro mode? The minimum focusing distance you get is almost 5" - not so hot for Macro - and the addition of the magnifier might be convincing the camera that it's too close to focus. Have you tried the camera's manual focus capability? If you can't make it focus manually, you can't make it autofocus either.
