Hey everyone. A long time ago my great grandma have me a dollar coin before I started collecting. This coin is actually what started my collecting. It is a 1921 high relief Peace dollar. From experience I would guess it is about an au55 if it were to be graded it has minor toning and minor edge wear other than that it is flawless. I was wondering if it is worth sending in to be graded because it is such a rare coin. I was also wondering about how much I could get for it if it were graded and was graded au55. Thanks for the help guys. I will post a picture when my stuff from the moving truck gets to my new house.

Funny coin, it is the 5th lowest mintage in the set, but the first in the series and the only high relief coin. The high relief dies however made for many weakly struck coins and a lot of high wear coins. Even though only about 1 mil were struck, there seem to be plenty around. the AU 55 and AU 58 1921 coins that I have seen at auction, have gone for $150-$200. The EF and XF I've seen went for $100-$130

Well worth having slabbed, preferably PCGS. They're pretty liquid in the marketplace.

So how does one get their coin graded? I'm new to having my coins graded. Do I join ngcs, do I have to buy a membership?

For you - unless you can justify the cost of becoming a member by submitting, say, 10+ coins a year - the best bet might be to get with a local dealer and piggyback you coin on one of his submissions. Many will do that for a nominal fee, and there's a concentration of excellent dealers in your area. It would also be an excellent way to confirm your coin's originality, from their opinion of it.

What VAM is it? Check out VAMworld and see if you can match it up with any of the known VAMs. http://www.vamworld.com/1921-P+Peace+VAMs Sometimes finding out what VAM your coin is can add a few extra dollars or even more sometimes.

VAM-3 (the Ray through L) is the only 1921 Peace VAM that really adds value, and in AU55 (ish) it's not going to be a huge difference although a very worthy addition to the body of knowledge about the coin.

You won't miss it if it's there, on an AU coin.
