Today I taught myself to weld.
I think I will need to practice but I am happy with the results for a first attempt. we will see if I can form it into a cuff bracelet without braking it.

taught yourself to weld coins, or weld in general?

Taught myself to weld in general then I tried silver took a few attempts before I got the torch temp correct.
Not bad for a test piece. I quite like it.

Nice work. I was looking into some jewelry making a while back, and the pros use silver solder, but I never really got all the details on it.

I want out try out a laser welder. it would sure be easier than using a torch. flux was easy enough to make its mostly borax.

Hope you have deep pockets as even used laser welders are very pricey. About the price of a great used car!

The trick to silver soldering or any soldering is clean, clean area that is to be soldered, use as little flux and solder as possible. and practice, practice.

A great book on soldering is
Soldering made simple by Joe Silvera
Kalmbach Books
ISBN 978-0-87116-406-3

Also has a number of kitchen table type jewelry projects.

It's actually called brazing, to be technical, but many people refer to what Circus and specksynder describe as soldering. Laser welders are quite fun to use, but man are they expensive.

Working for a fairly large multi national I get to play with some nice toys. I am pretty sure I can borrow some time to play with a laser welder

I'm torn. the jewelry looks really cool but seeing all those cut up coins still makes a part of me cringe.
