Cents because you get more bang for your buck. There are a lot of varieties and a few errors and even a few wheaties to be found roll searching. John1

I search different demoninations for different reasons. Halves: I search them for the silver and the proofs. The silver has really dried up for me lately, but I still feel this is the best place to come out ahead. A 40% is worth around two 90% dimes. Nickels: I search them mostly for the fun of it. You can sometimes find 35% nickels, and the rush from finding a dated Buffalo or even a rare V nickel keeps me looking forward to each new box I open. Cents: I always have at least a box of cents on hand, but I sort them only when I have free time or am listening to a baseball game on the radio. Not a lot of bang for your buck, but I keep all pre 1982's and anything else that looks interesting. I also like cents because I can sit on a few boxes at a time and not feel like I am tying up too much of my CRH money. Quarters: I search 1-2 boxes a year and that is only to find a couple of BU ATB or Territorial quarters for my collections. I personally don't feel that search for silver in quarters is worthwhile. Dimes: I hear good things about searching dimes, but I don't do it for two reasons. One, they are too hard to read and I am too OCD just to edge search them and two, I have to re-roll my coins and I hate messing with the very tight bank rolls I usually end up with.

Nickels are my favorite because you're guaranteed at least some nickel nickels, plus you can always feel good about yourself for finding a 12-sided nickel (or even a George V/VI!).

I've hunted only for silvers, and evidently the area where I live is a tough ballpark for that game. I've hunted over 70 boxes of halves without finding a single silver half (even 40%). Dime bank boxes yield about 2 silver dimes for every 3 boxes. War Nickels pop up around at the same frequency as silver dimes and sometimes even 1 per box in a good week. I have no credible stats on quarters yet. This is why I hunt pennies. I save only wheaties, but I average 12 per box. It's a small yield (almost always 50's, common mintage), but at least it's always productive and vastly less discouraging than silver-hunting through skunk box after skunk box.

If I started actively roll hunting again (and I might), it would be nickels since I could complete another set this way.

I have roll hunted since 1980, and find that it all depends on the amount of competition in you area, if searching for silver. Halves in my area have dried up since the rapid education of tellers by customers and crh'ers. I search more dimes than anything, and I do small volume, say, $30K a year. I usually get a few hundred silvers, but even the dimes have been weak lately. If you want to make the silver finds, you must hunt up boxes upon boxes upon boxes, this is the majic wand; the key to success is searching large volumes of coin.

ive been roll searching since the early 90s and right now I have to say dimes would be the best bet - plus the fact they are so easy to dump

lots of good information here! I have never roll hunted rolls from a bank. I have roll hunted in rolled coins from relatives. This may be a silly question but if I wanted to roll hunt, do I just go to a bank and ask for rolls of a certain denomination of coin? Or do I have to get a whole box? If I have to get a whole box, how many rolls are in each denomination box. Sorry for my ill knowledge on this subject, I am a newbie! Any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Banks are obligated to give you whatever amount you need converted, although there are upper limits.
It's iffy to ask for anything below one roll (except halves and dollars, which are often loose), but you can certainly ask for "$10 in dimes" or "$40 in quarters". Most dedicated hunters just get boxes because they're a standardized amount, and you'll have thousands of coins to look through (a $100 box of nickels contains 2,000 of the things).

Cents all the way! I have made more money in varieties, errors, wheats, and in copper sales than I ever would in silver searching. Plus cents are waaaaay more fun than anything else.

My son and I hunt mostly nickels, although he also gets a few rolls of dimes, pennies, and quarters. Nickels are the most productive. Quarters are the least productive.
