hi,

i just bought a one dollar 1871 but it says its a restrike. is that common for a coin like this and how should I Judge the value compared to an original?

If it's a USD then it's likely a copy with no value. Can you post an image?

No need to post a picture it it's marked "restrike". The US Mint did officially restrike a few coins (usually rarities) but the 1871 was not one of them. Weigh yours to see whether it has any silver value, if it's lighter than 26g it's probably base metal.
