Please let me know if this sounds legit. My boss asked me to look this up. His mother who is 90 years old recently passed away and he was going through some of her things this morning, and was finding some truly amazing old odds and ends some things back from the 1860's when he came across a dime that appears to have the classic "ten cent" tails on one side and the classic "one cent" tails on the other side. Now much like the other items, it appeared to be quite old. Could this possibly be a true mule? Stand by for pictures in the next couple of hours because he is bringing it in. He says the dime side is in almost pristine shape and that the penny side is a little worn. If this is legitimate.. I am interested in two things. One: how could it have happened, and two: What could be the potential value?

When I say classic one cent and one dime I mean the style that has the 2 leafs on either side... Sorry I am not a coin expert or even an novice.

Unfortunately there is no date on either side of the coin because they are both tails.:/

It will be easy to tell if it's right based on the metal. If it's bronze on one side and silver on the other, then something's up.

Sounds like a Magicians coin. Pics will tell if they're good clear photos.

The fact that the coin is "old" doesn't keep it from being a Magician's coin. If the metal is different on each side, it is obviously created post-mint. If it is obviously the same metal throughout, it is still likely "fake" in one sense or another, but one's attention is drawn somewhat more closely because true mules aren't unknown.

Are hammer and anvil dies interchangeable in the coining press?

Quote: Are hammer and anvil dies interchangeable in the coining press? Yes, at least that's my impression. My guess is "true" mules are deliberate on the part of a Mint worker.

Quote: Are hammer and anvil dies interchangeable in the coining press? USUALLY the hammer and anvil are not interchangable, but they don't always put obv on the hammers and rev on the anvils and vice versa. Also on some coins the rev might be the anvil while on another series the obv is the anvil. And I swear I have run into cases were some years of a series will have the hammer/obv and anvil/rev while other years have hammer/rev and anvil/obv. My bet is going to be on a magicians coins though.
