The US-based precious metals dealer Goldline (www.goldine.com) is advertising new "exclusive" gold and silver commemorative bullion coins produced by the RCM on its web site. This time out, the coins in question commemorate the WWII "Devil's Brigade," the joint US-Canada unit officially known as the First Special Service Force. The unit was the forerunner of special operations type units in both countries.

The Devil's Brigade silver coin is a ¾ ounce piece, as was their exclusive War of 1812 silver coin from last year. The new silver coin is 38mm in diameter, denominated as a $2.00 coin and struck with the RCM's standard bullion/uncirculated finish.

Based on confirmed information posted elsewhere about upcoming RCM releases, there will soon be a proof version of the silver Devil's Brigade coin available directly from the RCM; it will feature the same design. The proof coin will have less silver (0.7 ounces vs. 0.75 ounces) and be smaller in diameter (36mm vs. 38mm) but will feature a higher denomination ($5.00 vs. $2.00). So much for a sensible relationship between denominations!

The gold coin is a ¼ ounce piece featuring the same design but with a denomination of $5.00. I haven't seen information about a proof version of the gold coin, but it wouldn't surprise me to see one announced by the RCM over the next couple of weeks.

And the 3/4 oz is going to sell at premium to the now drastically devalued bullion content, whereas the mint will sell the proof at $59.95.

The proof appears to be a silver dollar spec. Late denomination change?

Anything is possible, but it's not the first time the RCM has used the silver dollar planchet for a coin of a different denomination. Since 2005, they've used the dollar planchet for coins with denominations of $5, $8 and $10.

the RCM has done the same thing with the war of 1812 1/4 oz gold coin as with this gold version, there is an unlimited production for goldline at a bullion price yet the RCM is advertising a limited 2000 production. Although some members disagree its the same coin being restruck, why would anyone buy the RCM version?
