Here are a few more pictures. They better illustrate the raised part beside this line, near the date. It looks almost like a die break.

I would say this is a deep and old scratch. The raised part down by the date is actually diplaced metal from the deep scratch. The scratch on the raised parts have actually worn away from circulation. Just my 2 cents worth.

I'm going to resurrect this thread because I came across this today. I've owned this PCGS AU53 1858 20 cents for years, recently pulled it from my safe box to re-image. Lo and behold, it has an extremely similar style die break on it. The same kind of raised die break with a lighter/somewhat scratch-looking line running parallel to the die break. Just like on the 1858 5c I posted on the line running from the 5 up towards the C in Cents.

The 5 cent coin is scratched. The scratch starts(or ends) on the rim. As the collar is the third die, it also must be cracked. The scratch goes across the C as well as the branch.

Seems very suspicious that a scratch would just happen to appear and run into a die break though. Looking at above the 8 and to the 5

I believe you have two scratches then. The scratch above the 8 and 5 was deep, as you can see the displaced metal next to the scratch.
