I have inherited a collection and could really use some help determining what if any are worth sending for grading. Edited by canadtech 06/25/2013 8:09 pm

Many here will be eager to help you. Most Important....."Do not rush to sell anything yet"..
1...Get a newer(2012 or 2013) Charlton Standard Coin Catalogue "Vol 1" ...and do a bit of homework.
2...Give us a short list of some of the dates etc...
3..."if possible" ..post a few pics of some of the "maybe" special ones here.. and tell us more about this collection.

Posting pictures here will be the best and quickest way to help get a ball park value of your collection.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN ANY COINS OR TOUCH THEM WITHOUT GLOVES!!
sorry for the yelling but its very important NOT to do that as it will render the coins near worthless.

I live in Winnipeg, but as a few members suggested posting on here will yield good results. ;)

I don't know why we don't have a sticky for threads like these of people looking for advice? Wonder if the MODS can help with that? That way someone can find the answers they are looking for quickly. And there have been so many great responses to boot. Canadtech

Thanks so much for the replies ! What a great forum, I've been reading awhile now, trying to learn. you guys ROCK ! Such politeness compared to many forums ! I won't rush to sell for sure, I have a 2011 vol 1, and 2013 vol 2, read cover to cover repeatedly, so now I now a little ! LOL ! Yes I will post pics, should I start a new thread ? There are just so many coins that may be only worth bullion I don't know where to start ! I don't want to flood you,,,and I don't have time to take pics of hundreds of coins ! It's the grading that I'm lost with, I need a better grasp on that. I have a lot of collector coins and sets, most of which appear to be worth very little, except the gold coins and a few silver maple leafs which seem pretty easy to find out about. the circulated stuff is where I really need help, there's a lot of it but so far I haven't found any major key dates, but a lot of stuff where it could be worth $5 or $1000 for example, I really wish I could have an expert help me sort it out ! There's just too much for me to do it coin by coin and know what is worth getting Graded. But hey, I guess I need to be patient and do it right ! I will post some pics and hopefully learn from there, again, Thanks Everyone !

oh ya, it's also the sheer variety of stuff that my uncle collected that has me overwhelmed, it seems he was trying to cover the bases ! hoping maybe there is a home run or two in there !

Rather than starting a new thread, why dont you post some pictures right here. You will find on this site that different members have different areas of expertise and interest. So for starters, why dont you just pick a random assortment of coins to picture. For example the ones you dont know if they are worth $5 or $1000. A lot of that will depend on the grade or condition of the coin. We can help you down the right road. As long as your not in a hurry, lets just start with a few for now. :)

I haven't bought a lot of coins, mostly proofs from provincial stamp and coin, 2065 portage ave. The gentleman that I dealt with was very helpful and I felt like I got a good deal from him. Gatewest coins for bullion. I've also had good dealings with them.

Get a good loupe or microscope if you have any coins with potentially valuable varieties (coinsandcanada.com normally lists these with separate pricing so you know which they are).

If you can be patient - now is not the time to be selling bullion-grade silver...

I am in Winnipeg as well but I don't believe I would be of any help since I generally collect Ancients and have been only collecting for 6 months or so!

There is a huge coin show coming to Winnipeg on July24-27. Its the annual RCNA convention. All the coin big-wigs will be there, as well as the medium and little wigs. There will be plenty of knowledge and (hopefully) friendly dealers there that can take a look at some of your coins in person. There might even be some Forum members there. I for one can't make it. :(
