First, see if they're dated after 1996. Then stick them to a magnet. If they don't stick, they're zinc.

Some dates were all zinc, but I don't remember which ones.

I also saw some guy showing off at a show - he would take (reasonably clean) pennies from the gathered audience and taste them to tell them apart. A guy with a magnet was there to verify. He had a 100% success rate...

Yeah , you should hold onto some zinc pennies . Zinc is very nice metal ! You wont loose much by keeping zincs and if all else fails you can offload them in the future when someone will pay a premium for them once they are tough to find ....

See which years on the list are broken down for magnetic/non-magnetic.

Those are the years where you get a mix of plated steel and plated zinc. As previously mentioned, the plated zinc starts in 1997 and then the 1999P test sets were the first plated steel. In the earlier years (2001-2006) P indicates plated steel and no P indicates plated zinc with a few exceptions where the wrong planchets got under the wrong dies. In 2007 they stopped using the P so only the magnet (or taste?) test can tell the difference. To my knowledge, 2008 only has plated steel coins.
