I have been offered to buy this coin, but neither me or the seller have any idea what it is.

If any of the expert have a idea ...or opinion I would be very thankful to hear it.

Questions I have
- what is it
- is it real
- is it worth anything in this condition (looks like a dug coin)
- What would be a good offer

Ancient-...maybe?

It's a Byzantine follis (40 nummi) from the reign of Anastasius.
That's pretty much all I can say; don't know much about these

It is Byzantine. Looks like Anastasius I think? Constantinople mint. Besides that I can't tell you much. Ski will knw more.

This would probably be a good practice one to get familiar with Wildwinds for you. I feel like it won't be the rarest of types so there should be a nice example on there.

Looks real to me at least.

As for prices I don't know Byzantine's aren't exactly my thing.

It's Byzantine. Echizento or Ancientnoob will probably chime in with the details.

Here are some resources you can use to attribute your coin:

It looks like a very nice starter coin. Probably impressive size too ! Not in great condition but probably a good deal for under $30. At $40 or $50 you might shop around or at least think about. I do not collect Byzantine but the larger ones are impressive. I may be under valuing it but I am a proud cheapskate !

FR I think I may almost be a bigger cheapskate then you right now! I don't know if I could go as high as $30 for that one.

This is a very nice example of Sear #22. Only issued with the epsilon officina, Constantinople mint, star on left and crescent in right field. What makes it more interesting is the star on the shoulder. I haven't seen that before.

Well it does appear to me to one of the large sized 35mm Byzantines. Seeing I have weakness for jumbo AE's I might fork out 30 clams.

I thought I would check this out more after supper ..
but it looks like echizento nailed it

SB22

I am sure I can picked this coin up for $15 to $20
I am a little concerned about the dirt .. if I get it
should I try and soak it .. to get more dirt off?

I forgot to post/take some pictures of it with other coins,
so all could see the size. At it's widest point it is bigger then a U.S. half dollar (30.6mm), but smaller than a Morgan dollar (38mm).

Not everyone said ... but I am guessing from the responses that this coin looks real.

Thank you all again for your postings.. I think I am learning a little with each coin I find.

I wouldn't worry too much about the dirt. Personally I think it accents the coin really nicely. The size sounds right for what FR said for one of the "big" Byzantine's.

I agree ! Leave well enough alone. You will not increase the value of the piece and once removed what's done is done. You will need to bury it for another 1000 years !

I will take your advice and leave it alone.

I did enjoy reading about Anastasius I, especially the part

Quote:
At the end of his reign, he left the Imperial treasury richer by 23,000,000 solidi or 320,000 pounds of gold.[4]

We need rulers like that today

The coin looks like it has a nice sand patina so I wouldn't clean it at all. If you can get the coin for $20 that's a great deal. Considering that this type was only produced at one officina and with the extra detail on the shoulder piece. I would value at $60-$80.

I'm with echizento in this one.
A) the attribution is correct.
B) the coin is 1000% real
C) do NOT clean THIS coin
D) I am weaker than FR, I would be happy at $50 clams. If you can get it for 15 - 20 go for it
