I had a birthday yesterday and spent a little time in reflection. I posted an 85-O GSA morgan for grading that my dad surprised me with (early birthday present). It was one of those gifts that is special to me. He's more of a GSA collector than I am and does not currently own a non CC GSA....I've actually been trying to find one for him for a while. This gift is special because I know it is something he would like to have. This got me reflecting about the coin hobby. My dad and I drifted apart a bit while I was in college (my own doing, was more interested in hanging out with my "friends" who no longer are around, than with spending time with my mom or dad). About 4 years ago I found myself getting interested in coin collecting.....and bam my dad and I now have a common interest. He joined in on it. It gives us something to talk about, and something to do together. I'm not going to say we have a perfect relationship....but it's much better than it used to be. The side effect of a great hobby.

Does anyone else have a story about what this hobby has done for them?

I used to be a casual collector back in the late 70's early 80's, then I kinda drifted away while I was in the military. I picked up the hobby when I retired from the service and I began to specialize in the 7070 type collection. I tried the series collection with a partial Lincoln Cent, Liberty and Jefferson sets in the blue Whitman albums (I still have those on the bookshelf).

Coin collecting has made me quite a bit lighter in the wallet, but very enriched in knowledge and satisfaction! And made quite a few friends here on the CCF as well!

My first curiosity in a coin was at about seven years old.
The interest and curiosity in coins has been with me from that time.
Some decades have passed since then.

Some blokes are defined by their job.
Perhaps some of me has been defined by my numismatic proclivities.

It filled a lot of hours over a lot of years. I think coin collecting is a solitary kind of a hobby but it was extra nice when I got one of my nephews interested for about a year then he lost interest. Keeps me out of trouble (most of the time)

I've found over the years that collecting coins and many other items is:
1. A method of getting rid of excess money
2. A method of spending to much spare time
3. A way to use up a lot of gasoline in my car to get to coin shows
4. A large inventory of small metal round objects that I can't take with me at the end
5. I have a large pile of STUFF that due to it's value can not show people
6. I've learned that these small round metal objects become sort of a habit that is not easily broken.
Rest in Peace

It's allowed me to accrue a public reputation for knowledge and wisdom which is completely unsupported by my actual capabilities.

The role of a Moderator is a remarkably political one. Every_single_word must be carefully calculated for effect, and one is never off the clock.

For me, coin collecting has been a never ending staircase.
No matter how seasoned you think you might be, the reality is, you always find something that you have never seen or just learned from.

Numismatics is truly fascinating.

I have learned so much about history and geography by collecting world coins. I never thought history and the politics of empires could be so fascinating through the study of coins.
