In 1998 The Royal Mint say they struck some 2p coins in bronze for a few months - I was wondering does anyone know the full details of why this happened ?

Some very interesting patterns to be seen in this link!
The Royal Australian Mint have quite often used old pattern designs and issued then as NCLT items in later years.

I believe it was to do with producing blanks for the new Euro coins.

A few little places on the continent introduced the Euro in 2002 - for this they required vast quantities of bronze plated steel blanks to turn into 1, 2 or 5 euro cents.

I stumbled upon the answer to my question tucked away in The Royal Mint museum apparently => In consequence of a temporary shortage in plating capacity, The Royal Mint struck 2p coins in bronze as well as in copper-plated steel.

funny, they gave the same answer as I did :)
The shortage in capacity was due to the requirement of filling an order for blanks of bronze plated euro cents.
