Hi Chuck
Would the 1990-D Jefferson nickel missing the designer's initials (FS) be a variety or a error coin, and what would cause this to happen to this to this coin missing the initials that is ?

Thanks Bruce.

wow kinda hard to search for that. FS can mean Felix Schlag or Full Steps. I'm interested to know as well. I'll sit quietly and wait.

Bruce, the 1990 D nickel with the missing F.S. is on my look-out-for-this-nickel-list. I don't recall which website I got the information from. If I remember correctly it is listed as an error.

It would technically be an error since the die did not have the anomaly when it was made. The designers initials are always a part of the design as hubbed into all dies. They cannot be "forgotten", they cannot be "missed". What causes them to become missing is overpolishing of the die in the area of the initials. Because they are very small and are close to the edge of the design, for them to go missing after a die wears or is polished is completely understandable and at least somewhat surprising that it doesn't happen far more frequently.

Understandable to who? As in the normal minting process? Then my assumption would be that it wouldn't carry a premium, but that seems just the opposite in this case. Is it because it's just not something that is commonly looked for? Knowing the government and the fact that they will try to squeeze everything they can out of something, you would think these over-polished dies would be used until they break, so there would be a lot of these floating around.

I certainly hope the opposite is true so Bruce has the rarity, I'm just skeptical how the collecting public will see it.

Understandable that it could happen, not necessarily that it has, or how many times it has. It might only happen once in twenty years, but it does happen.

As to premium value - because of the nature of their making, I would never pay a premium value for missing details on a coin due to overpolishing, but there are a lot of other people who would.
