Yeah, I think you have to request it though, they don't do it automatically.

yes that is correct, if you have toning or something special going on on the reverse and you would like the coin turned around where the reverse is showing they will do it for you no problem

What does the Star Designation represent?

means its almost the next grade but not quite, kind of like PQ means

PCGS will do this also if the reverse has the nice toning. The NGC star indicates a coin with exceptional eye appeal for the assigned grade and I see it most frequently for toned Morgans. If a Morgan is pretty clearly limited to, say, an MS64 grade due to cheek abrasions or field marks but has beautiful tone, they'll hang a star on it. Other services might just bump it to the next grade based on superior eye appeal. Regarding this coin, the seller has set a pretty high price for a common-date Morgan with nice but not really spectacular tone. I think you could find prettier toning on a similar coin for less money. Also, reverse tone usually doesn't fetch as much of a premium as obverse tone. Just my opinion!

One more thing to mention- if you have an NGC registry set, you are awarded more points for coins with a star designation.

A NGC 64* with more complete reverse toning with purples pinks and yellows sold on Teletrade last September for $300.
I have deleted my tirade on what is wrong with the "*" designation because this really isn't the time or the place.

Hmmm.... I always thought it just meant good eye appeal. I didn't think it had anything to do with grade.

Here's a reverse-toned 1885-O Morgan, slabbed by PCGS with the toned side forward. This coin has beautiful iridescent tone over the entire reverse. The obverse is white. I had to mess with the image in Photoshop to get the color somewhat close to how it looks in-hand. It's still not very accurate. I don't know how forum members like Hadleydog manage to get such excellent color photos of their treasures! Anyway, this coin carried about a $250 premium due to the toning, a couple years ago. I bought it from David Weygant at one of the Long Beach shows.

To me it's just a way to justify the 64 grade, so in a way I think it does help the grading portion. Even from the distant photo of the obverse that cheek doesn't look very good at all. I'd hate to see what it would look like under Superdave's camera. That being said, I think the star is what gave it a 64 grade to begin with. JMHO.
