Seen on ebay, 2013 $5 Southern Sky Pavo selling at $ 35.99 with the shipping cost at $ 110.00 for a total of $ 145.99 which is in the average. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2013-SOUTHE...em338341f89dMy question is : WHY doing it that way ? Cheaper on ebay fees for the seller ? Cheaper on custom fees for the buyer ? or Both ?

No advantage to it any more. Seller just didn't get the memo.

A few weeks ago someone sold a 1914 $5 gold coin for $700 and charged $300 for shipping. I have no idea why people do that because ebay charges final fees on the item PLUS shipping. So, in my case ebay will base the final fees on $700 + $300 = $1000. In your example, final fees will be charged on $145.99. Perhaps the reason for these actions is based on the ignorance of ebay rules. BTW, the ebay calculates the final fees on both the cost of the item and shipping to prevent sellers from selling things for 1 cent, 50 cents, or 1 dollar and charging $10, $20, $100 for shipping to avoid final fees. Imagine ebay getting a commission on a ten cents Buy it Now item. They would become bankrupt very soon.

Thank you all for your answer. I've just found what you're talking about on ebay fees. Here it is : How fees are calculated
Final value fee
If the item sells, you're charged a final value fee. Final value fees are calculated based on the total amount of the sale and are charged per item. The total amount of the sale is the final price of the item, shipping charges, and any other amounts you may charge the buyer. Sales tax is not included. So, for what I understand, there's no advantage for the seller. What about the buyer and the custom fees ? The seller can declare a lower price for the item and still be legal ?

Or maybe just try to reimburse you the sale value of the item if there's a problem and keep the shipping charges? ;-) You can report items with excessive shipping fees as it is against ebay policies.

This is done to trick people. Some people will sell a coin worth $80 for $60 but charge $30 shipping. They're trying to trick the seller but in the process attract others with a really cheap price. I've seen St.Gaudens Common dates sell for spot but the guy charges like $200 for shipping and thus makes a profit for what he probably bought at maybe $50-$100 over spot.

I think people just don't know that shipping attracts the same fees now. I suppose they will work it out when they get their next invoice.

This policy has been in effect for several years now. People who are new to ebay or infrequent sellers may not be aware of it but most ebay sellers know this policy.

i also think it's because the bid looks a lot more attractive and sometimes people may make a bid on it because they see the attractive price and don't necessarily look at shipping.

Could it have anything to do with doing his income tax at the end of the year?

What you do is buy the coin, and pay for it but add a memo.that you would like an jtemized list of shilping and handling costs in the box.

If the totals don't add up, do a chargeback on your credit cardOnly actual s/h is allowed to be charged. No profitting from it is allowed.
