With the recent fall in gold prices I am looking into taking my collection a step further and investing in some good gold coin(s). Technically I do already have gold in the form of the 3 Indian gold fanams but they weigh 1g combined and I'm not sure of the purity (Any help on that would be good too.)

So back to the pressing question. What gold should I buy. Now I just spent a fair amount on a Mexican 8 reales coin ($185) so I only have a budget of $150 or so. Here are some options as I see them. I prefer to invest in old circulation gold but I'm looking into Bullion as well.

Here are my best options as I see them (Feel free to inform me on any more):

Bullion:
1/10oz American Gold Eagle (Sell for around $145)
1/10oz Canadian Maple Leaf (Sells for around $150)(I don't want to invest in 1/20oz pieces)

Circulation:
Mexico gold 2 Pesos ($85)
Mexico Gold 2 1/2 Pesos ($95)
1/2 Escudos (Carolus IV) Spain ($150)

Please suggest more. If you can provide me with links as to where I can buy gold coins. Again I am looking for mainly old circulation gold but if it comes down to bullion I will likely go for the 1/10oz Gold Eagle.

Please Advise.

The lower you go in denomination, the higher you go in premium per ounce. In your price range, silver might be a good alternative, too. As for gold, the bullion coins are pretty straight forward as to value (maples & eagles). I like the Mexican Dos Pesos (because I like the coin and they are widely accepted). When buying, one is wise to consider the liquidity of the piece. (That is, you don't want to be sitting on coins that are not easy to sell.) Because of the higher premium of lower denominations, many suggest buying gold pieces of 1/4 ounce or more, but if you are bound to a lower budget, then that is not an option.

You are in Canada ...
If going for gold, I'd suggest maples.

However, in your price range, I would buy silver, because I would have more chunks of metal to admire ... and having several pieces of coin would allow me more flexibility when it comes time to liquidate.

This is the only coins/bullion dealer I know of

http://www.chards.co.uk/

Apparently tax free but I've never bought from them. I am quite tempted with that Australian 1 kilo gold $30 though...

Thank you for your advice Jerry. To say the truth I already have a lot of silver maples. I bought 20 of them just 2 weeks ago and then silver dropped $3 the next day. I have around 100oz of silver with 46 maples, 2 pandas and a monster 50oz bar. Then on top of that I have tons of scrap silver.

I'm looking get myself atleast a bit of gold before prices go up again (As they will in due time).

I like your idea of Dos Pesos'. I may just get two of those. What do you think of the 2 1/2 pesos' coins?

Again more opinions are more than appreciated.

Buy something with numismatic value. From your list I suggest the 1/2 escudo. The beta of collectable coins is much less than that of bullion.

I picked up a nice Mexico eight escudos bust of Chas. III legend of Chas. IV for $1615 in February. Driving back from Long Beach my buddy asked me if this was a bullion purchase. I said no, if gold goes to $1000 the coin is still worth what I paid for it. If gold goes to $2K it is obviously worth more than melt.

Every once in while Northeast Numismatics prices something wrong and there is always ebay.

Thanks for all the help guys. Looks like I will be going with Mexican 1905-1959 gold 5 Pesos'. APMEX sells then for $163 each. If gold goes down I might just get one for $150.
