Anyone have any problems with counterfeit Mexican Libertad gold coins? I've heard it can be a problem.

Any coin can be counterfeited. I hear Pandas and American Eagles are more often counterfeited. Anyway: my issue with Libertads is manufacturing quality... Have seen some defects on them. Too bad, the recent design really looks great.

I hear people occassionally say AGE ASE are counterfeited but it seems most people believe counterfeitters would want to steer clear of the Secret Service and would not want to counterfeit these. Always interesting when eagles are brought up.

I find the gilded Libertads particularly beautiful (have a gilded ASE also), are these often counterfeited as well, you think? Looking to get a gilded Britannia eventually -

Libertads are very beautiful coins... but I've seen some production defects on them. Too bad. They shine differently, some had other defects like deep scratches...
But they are still among my favorite coins...

Off-topic, but one can go to the head office downtown and order in person, and on the same avenida (avenue) take pictures of said Angel de la Libertad. They ask for ID and make you wait and give you a generic year's catalog of some coins they may have. Sadly they don't offer bullion, hence off-topic.
On-topic, a good reason to stay away from proof gold coins and by extension authenticated plastic-sealed bars: an investor will not want to risk opening the packet to test the gold proper for fear of devaluing their investment. Know what you're getting into by reading about and feeling the yellow metal.

Some one asked earlier and it was a good question I thought: Do Libertads have a denomination on them? In other words, are they a coin or a round?
Thanks.

It's bullion, just round-shaped bullion. Round vs coin, what is the actual difference, I feel. I mean, just because an ASE says one dollar on it, doesn't mean you can readily spend it, so all this chitchat of is it a coin, is it currency, is kind of a waste of time. Just know that it's one ounce of fine silver and the shape of said unit is a cylinder. If your car were a triangle shape I'm sure your car would function exactly like any other. Libertads are the most down to Earth (truthful) silver bullion "coin" there is. It's produced by the Mexican Mint, same as the peso currency, however they don't pretend like it's real currency, instead it is treated as physical savings. Silver is a long-term holding, and usually increases in value over time. When the price goes down one can save money buying more silver (you get a "discount" when "buying" your savings-product), when the price goes down it's time to sell and enjoy the fruits of one's labor. What's the takeaway? A silver Libertad is a cylindrical silver unit meant for saving and not spending. It basically tells you what it is and doesn't lie about what it isn't (currency/money). I wish I had more Libertads but I'd rather stack 10 ounce bars because they don't steal space in the safe. Silver is silver, you can cut it down to what size you want and it'll be worth that much in weight (fungible). You can't tear a dollar bill's corner to pay for anything, and that should tell you which one is worth more (metal vs man's invention in a ledger).
