When I picked up the Washington Centennial Medals I came across this as well. It's roughly the same size(38mm)as the others and likely made by the same company(Childs).

It's quite beautifully designed and has a nice high relief.

Can anyone tell me anything about it? Thanks.

A remarkable prize medal.

What is the winner's first name ?

It looks to me like Zaidce but I've never come across such a name.

How much did you pay for the medal, please ?

Have you found the essay ?

Wow!

Great find, thanks!!

That's amazing. The ribbon attachment is different and the dates are nearly 70 years apart but it's the same medal. How many of these do you suppose they made and for how long?

Anyway, it's too bad that the ebay medal appears to have been rather harshly cleaned.

I never saw that name before either. I'm guessing it's a girl's name but I could be wrong.

I picked up this medal, along with a couple of others, for probably about 25 cents at a church rummage sale some 30 years ago.

I've wondered about the essay myself. I suppose it must have been published in the Chicago Daily News. Maybe I can find it.

I didn't find the essay but I did come across this on the internet:

It was on the 21st of November, 1894, that Samuel Owen Buckner was united in
marriage to Miss Zaidee Eddy Withington, whose birth occurred in Grand Rapids,
Michigan, July 1, 1876, her parents being James and Kate (Eddy) Withington.

So her name was Zaidee and she was about 15 when she wrote the essay.

You're right. It could be the same 1891 reverse for all we know.
